Patrice Evra is set to be asked to speak to an FA inquiry after making allegations of racism against Liverpool’s Luis Suarez on Saturday.

The FA will start an investigation today to get to the bottom of the incident at Anfield.

But it is believed the process will be a slow-burner and that eventual outcome of the alleged flashpoint will take time.

United’s stand-in captain and Liverpool’s Uruguayan striker clashed in front of the Kop during the second half of the 1-1 draw on Merseyside.

The Reds left-back reacted to something that appeared to have been said by Suarez and referee Andre Marriner had to speak to the warring pair.

Evra was booked for dissent but later told French TV station Canal Plus: “I was very upset. In 2011 you can’t say things like this. He knows what he said, the ref knows it, it will come out.

“I won’t repeat what he said, but it was a racist word, and he said it more than ten times. He tried to wind me up.

“I won’t make a huge deal out of it, but it’s very upsetting and disappointing.”

Despite saying he didn’t want to make a big issue of it, the fact Evra has spoken to TV and made it public of the fact referee Marriner was made aware of the incident means the FA have now got to get involved.

The FA is refusing to talk about the allegations any further after an FA spokesman said on Saturday: “The FA has been made aware of an incident that is alleged to have occurred during the Liverpool versus United fixture at Anfield.

“Referee Andre Marriner was made aware of the allegation at the end of the fixture and has subsequently reported this to the FA. The FA will now be making enquiries into the matter.”

Liverpool said Suarez categorically denied the claims. An Anfield spokesman added: “The first we knew about these allegations was 20 minutes after the final whistle when the manager was asked to go into the referee’s office and told about them.

“The first thing we did is ask the player and he has categorically denied using any language of that nature.”

Suarez said he was ‘upset’ by the allegations on a post to his Facebook page.

He added: “I’m upset by the accusations of racism. I can only say that I have always respected and respect everybody. We are all the same. I go to the field with the maximum illusion of a little child who enjoys what he does, not to create conflicts.”

Evra has been at the centre of two other racism storms in his United career.

Against Liverpool at Old Trafford in January 2006, two deaf TV viewers’ lip read Liverpool’s defender Steve Finnan allegedly racially abusing the Frenchman and made a complaint to police.

But after a Trafford Police investigation, no further action was taken.

In the April ’08 ‘Battle of the Bridge’ when Evra was involved in a melee with a Chelsea groundsman, United’s report to the FA on the incident was based on racial allegations.

Evra hadn’t heard the comments himself but a United club official and player were adamant the left back had been the victim of racist abuse during the after-match brawl.

An FA disciplinary panel ruled there was no evidence of racism and Evra was banned for four-matches, with Chelsea fined £25,000 for failing to control an employee.

United were not commenting on Saturday’s allegations and will await the outcome of the FA investigation.
