A Nigerian player with Belgian fifth-tier club
Merksem SC passed away on Sunday during his
side’s match against FC Kaart at the Jef
Mermansstadion stadium in the Merksem district
of Antwerp.
Defender Bobsam Elejiko, 30, suddenly passed
out in the second half without contact from any
other player, the club’s media officer Ronny Van
Kets told Demorgen.be on Monday.
The match was halted as Merksem’s
physiotherapist and a head nurse administered
first aid before the arrival of a team of doctors in
an ambulance, Van Kets said. Doctors spent 40
minutes trying to revive the Nigerian in vain.
“With deep sadness we announce the sudden
death of Bobsam Elejiko,” the club said in a
statement. “He collapsed and died suddenly on
the pitch and our thoughts are with his family
and friends.”
The Nigerian had a background in the Belgian first
division. After a two-year stay at Turnhout, he
played four seasons for Westerlo before
relocating to Antwerp, where he couldn’t find his
feet, and in 2008 he moved to Portuguese sidee
Beira Mar.
After several failed trials, the defender returned to
Belgium.
