With the situation of things, not just the state of economy is deteriorating in Nigeria, our morality is gradually being thrown away too.
In a recent interview, Mrs. Ebele Nwuzor who runs an NGO, Sympathy Foundation Worldwide, which has a self-imposed task of rehabilitating prostitutes in Nigeria, disclosed that:

"Since Amuwo Odofin is our neighbourhood, we decided to carry out a survey on the number of girls into prostitution. As at 2008, we discovered that Amuwo Odofin local government had 24 brothels, nightclubs and hotels. We discovered that each of them has an average of 28 girls coming to hawk sex per night. Now, looking at the number of brothels and having 28 on the average, we were able to come up with 684 per night hawking sex in Amuwo Odofin. If you multiply that figure by 20 (local government areas in Lagos) you will arrive at 13,680 girls hawking sex per night in Lagos alone. Don’t forget that this number does not include freelancers and undergraduates who leave their schools and stand in the streets at night. The figure is for those who have owned up to the fact that prostitution is their business."

Who ever knew that ashawo was such a big enterprise in Lagos!

I read the story in The Sun Newspapers and got pissed off. Though Prostitution has been with us since the beginning of time, I know many of these ladies became Flesh Merchants because of the economic problems in Nigeria. Many youths in the country have great ideas but they find it hard to secure loans that will help them take their ideas to the next level. Apart from that, the business environment in Nigeria is harsh. There are no structures on ground that can help budding entrepreneurs grow their businesses smoothly without spending lots of money greasing the palms of corrupt Government officials. Women are very vulnerable and they can lose focus when there is no support for them to achieve their goals. I believe more NGO's should come in to rehabilitate these Prostitutes and give them a second chance in life. Men should also learn to be faithful to their wives instead of patronizing these daughters of Jezebel.

That survey is inept... or how could you pick only one local govt and conclude for the entire state? Atleast one brothel per local govt would have been reasonable
