Mandela was never a Muslim. His family, for many generations before him, practised a regional tribal based religion. In his memoirs, Mandela himself says that his life was rich with "custom, ritual and taboo". He was, and remains, firmly rooted in his southern African heritage. There are Muslims in that area of Africa, but they are a very small minority. Nelson Mandela has no Muslim connection.
