Deputy Inspector General of Police Haruna John, his orderly and two others were among the fatalities in today's helicopter crash in Jos, according to Plateau State Police spokesman, ASP Samuel Dabai.

According to Dabai, they were going round the city on an official assignment.

Haruna John was until recently, the Commissioner of Police in the FCT. He was handpicked for promotion to a Deputy Inspector General of Police alongside 7 by the Acting IG of Police, Mohmamed Dahiru Abuabakar on February 22, 2012 and officially decorated with his new rank on March 2, 2012, less than two weeks ago.

The incident happened at about 12:15pm today. Eye witnesses said the aircraft crashed into a house along the road, behind a satellite market.

Meanwhile, the Plateau State Government has described the death of DIG John Haruna as a "huge blow to the Plateau peace process''.

"It is a very terrible loss. Very painful to the people and government of Plateau State,'' Mr Abraham Yiljab, the Commissioner for Information, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Wednesday.

Haruna died alongside three others on board a police surveillance helicopter that crashed at the Jenta Mangoro area of Jos on Wednesday morning.

"This sudden death is devastating, especially considering the dynamic and creative role played by the DIG who was with the Chief of Defence Staff when he visited Plateau to beef up security efforts,'' Yiljap said.

He said that Haruna's contributions to the peace meetings were "extraordinary''.

"From his contributions at security meetings and stakeholders' meeting on Tuesday, he showed himself as one very very versed in his area.

"He was exceptionally kind and had great ideas. He was very frank. His arguments and positions on issues were always very genuine and you could always tell that he had a sincere heart,'' the commissioner said.

NAN reports that the helicopter was on surveillance of flash spots in Jos metropolis following renewed hostilities in the crises-ridden north-central state. (NAN)
