ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria's secret police say a Briton and Italian kidnapped by a splinter cell of a radical Islamist sect were killed before a failed rescue operation by commandos.

In a statement released Wednesday, the State Security Service also said the mastermind of the kidnapping died in their custody after suffering bullet wounds from a raid before the rescue attempt.

The secret police blamed the kidnapping on the sect known as Boko Haram. The statement said those guarding Chris McManus and Franco Lamolinara had instructions to kill them if they thought they were going to be captured by authorities.

British and Nigerian commandos attempted to rescue the two men March 8 from the house they were being held in in Sokoto, the major city of Nigeria's northwest.
