SUSPECTED fulani herdsmen yesterday attacked Yongogba, another Tiv settlement in Chanchanji ward of Takum, Taraba State.
Sources said the Fulani militants attacked Tiv farmers in the suburbs of Takum, despite the presence of many soldiers deployed in the area to keep peace.
It was gathered that the marauders came from Donga and with their kinsmen in Takum, rode on motorcycles to Yongogba, which had been deserted.
“They set the village ablaze, but nobody was killed because the inhabitants of Yongogba had vacated the area before the attack,” eyewitnesses said.
A resident said: “We are still hearing gunshots. This scares people who are now leaving the area in droves.”
The Tiv in Taraba yesterday held a meeting, seeking peace with the Fulani.
The meeting was also attended by a member of the Sultan of Sokoto Tiv/Fulani Peace Committee, Chief Teghtegh Shaakaa Adagi.
He said: “We are not at war with the Fulani. Criminals have infiltrated us.”
The Tiv leaders, who spoke through the Tiv Cultural and Social Association (TCSA), attributed the Fulani/Tiv crisis to criminal acts.
In a statement signed by the TCSA President, Philip Ihom, the Tiv said they did not engage in any war with their neighbours –the Fulani.
The Tiv leaders said they appreciated the efforts of Governor Danbaba Suntai in trying to broker peace “between us and the Fulani.”
Soldiers were mobilised to Donga yesterday to keep peace.
Leaders of the Tiv are expected to meet Fulani leaders today.
