The police on Wednesday told a Coroner's inquest into the death of one Mr Ademola Aderinto that the deceased was shot dead by a Divisional Police Officer, Mr Segun Fabunmi, in self-defence.

The inquest into Aderinto’s death began on March 16 at an Ikeja Magistrates' Court presided over by Lagos State Coroner, Mr Tajudeen Elias.

Aderinto was allegedly shot dead by Fabunmi on Jan. 9 at Ogba area of Lagos during the nationwide fuel subsidy protests.

Fabunmi was the DPO of Pen Cinema Police Station, Agege, when the incident happened.

However, ASP Oluwole Alagbe, an Investigative Police Officer, Homicide Section, State CID, Yaba, told the court that the DPO acted in ``self-defence’’ during an attack by hoodlums.

Alagbe said: ``Based on the statement the DPO gave us, he claimed that he was in his station when he received a distress call that hoodlums were attacking innocent citizens and disposing them of their valuables.

``When he and his patrol team got there, they were attacked by hoodlums who threw bottles at them.

``Some of the hoodlums started struggling with the officer for his rifle and during the struggle, the gun went off’ and hit the victim.

The witness said the DPO and his team were later apprehended by the police and their statements were taken.

Alagbe said the DPO had been kept in prison custody till date, adding that investigations revealed that a distress call was indeed sent to the station on that day.

According to him, the police also visited three other persons who were shot during the incident and obtained their statements.

He said the body of the deceased was taken by the police to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where a post-mortem was conducted by one Prof. Bafunwa.

The court admitted all the statements, including that of the DPO, as exhibits.

Earlier, Mr Leonard Dibia, counsel to Access to Justice, initiator of the inquest, and Mr Yinka Farounbi of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch, had asked the court for a short adjournment.

The counsel said efforts were being made to bring the relations of the deceased and other eyewitnesses to court to give evidence.

The case has been adjourned to April 11 for further hearing.
