Business activities were brought to temporary halt at Tinubu area of Lagos Island, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria when some miscreants stabbed their colleague to death with a broken bottle over a misunderstanding.
The deceased, identified as Saheed, aged 25, was said to have had quarrel with his suspected assailant, Muri, alias Babanla now at large, recently at Ijora-Badia, a suburb in Iganmu area of Lagos State during which Muri sustained arm injury.
Both the deceased and the assailant were said to reside at Ijora-Badia before Muri escaped to Lagos Island and stayed with Yusuf Alli, alias Salako at uncompleted building at Ajisomo street, known as ‘Oriketebe’ on the Island.
According to eye witnesses, “Babanla was sitting among his colleagues at the entrance of Ajisomo street when the deceased was sighted, walking along Nnamdi Azikwe street at about 9. 30am and was pursuit by Babanla and three other youths in their circle”.
“Babanla, Ife, Adeniyi Kosoko and Ibrahim Alli alias ‘Abo’ pursued Saheed and caught up with him near Tinubu square where Muri stabbed him at the back. When Saheed turned back to see his attackers, Muri stabbed him again on the throat, which led to his death on the spot and the assailants took to their heels,” the source narrated.
The incident caused commotion in the area as traders who had just opened their shops for business hurriedly locked up and fled. Passers-by and motorists that plied the road immediately abandoned the route for another.
The remains of the deceased was later taken away by his relatives from Ijora-Badia after they were informed about the incident.
The incident, which was reported at Ebute-Ero police station, was later transferred to Area ‘A’ police command, Lion Building where some residents at Ajisomo assisted the police to arrest one of the suspected assailants called Ife, a friend of the deceased who carried away the corpse, and Muri’s mother at Ijora-Badia.
Confirming the incident which happened on Tuesday morning, the Chairman and Secretary of Joint Community Development Associations (CDAs) in Ward B3, Alhaji Raheem Adeniji and Prince Adamson Idowu respectively hinted that efforts have been made to get rid of the notorious boys and girls that live at Oriketebe for long without success, due to the involvement of some youths in the area who associate with them, “but now, every efforts will be made to rid our area of the miscreants.
“On this case of day light murder, we are giving the police every support to nail all the culprits and other groups in the area. We have been to Ebute-Ero Police Station and Area ‘A’ command to make useful information to the police on how to get rid of hoodlums on the Island.”
Meanwhile, a police source from Area ‘A’ Command disclosed that detectives had begun searching for the remaining hoodlums, adding that the case will soon be transferred to the Homicide Section of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba for further investigation.
