Tensions flared in Banex, a bustling electronics and telecommunications market in Abuja, following a clash between soldiers and traders on Saturday. In response to the escalating situation, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command swiftly dispatched intelligence officers to the area.

The confrontation, captured in a viral video circulating on social media, depicted a chaotic scene where civilians appeared to overpower some soldiers during a heated altercation at Banex.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Defence Headquarters and the Nigerian Army's spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

According to Abdul, a trader who witnessed the incident, the conflict originated from a dispute over the sale of a mobile phone. "There's a problem at Banex now. Some soldiers came to complain about a phone, and during an argument with the traders, a fight ensued," Abdul disclosed.

Responding to inquiries, SP Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, confirmed that Commissioner of Police Benett Igweh had taken action, deploying officers from the FCT Intelligence Response Team to the scene.

"The CP has deployed the Intelligence Response Team to the scene," Adeh affirmed.

As the situation unfolds, authorities are working to restore calm and resolve the conflict at Banex market, underscoring the need for swift intervention to prevent further escalation of tensions between traders and security personnel.

In a country were some soldiers are now involved in stealing, armed robbery, kidnapping for ransom. As an ex-soldier I know that no civilian will insult a military personnel in uniform not to talk of fighting them.
