3  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Drunk Tourist Falls Asleep On Airport Baggage Belt, Passes Through Powerful X-ra on: 10-08-2012 12:44 PM
Letting go of your all important luggage at airports can often be a stressful experience for many travellers.
Stories about holidaymakers losing their bags can lead to anxiety for many passengers.
But for one drunk Norwegian tourist recently this wasn’t an issue – he simply decided to join his bag.
The 36-year-old man fell asleep on the baggage belt at Rome’s Fiumicino airport and travelled 160 feet before he was identified by an X-ray scanner
He had earlier arrived at the international terminal of Italy’s busiest airport with a backpack and a can of beer in his hand.
When he went to check in for his flight to Oslo, he found nobody on duty at the airline desk.
So, he decided to jump over the counter and promptly fell into a deep sleep on the baggage belt, next to his bag.
Eventually, the belt began to move and took the drunk traveller through the secure baggage area of Terminal 3.
It is believed he travelled for 15 minutes before his body was spotted by shocked officials in an X-ray image on their screens.
The Norwegian was curled up in the foetal position. The man, who has not been named, slept through the entire incident.
Fiumicino airport police were called to the incident to investigate and officers had trouble waking the man from his deep sleep.
An official said: ‘There’s usually an episode like this once a year and we are alert.
‘In this case we were notified, we sounded the alarm immediately and we took action.
He added that the incident did not expose any weakness in the security of the airport terminal and said it was not the first time an incident involving ‘drunks or people with psychological problems’ had happened.
Another officer said it was impossible to avoid situations like this if nobody is on the check-in desk.
The man was taken to a hospital by police officers who were concerned about his exposure to X-rays.
He was then reported to prosecutors for causing alarm at the airport.
Last month, airport security staff in the United Arab Emirates were given a shock when they spotted a five-month-old hidden in luggage on a bag scanner.
The Egyptian husband and wife arrived at Sharjah International Airport but were held at immigration as they did not have a visa for the newborn, according to report.
Officials allowed them to stay until the relevant office re-opened on the Sunday. But in their desperation, the couple decided to make a run for it when the staff changed at the end of their shift.
However, they still needed to get through Customs screening, so they put the baby into a bag and bundled him through the X-ray machine.
But their plan became unstuck when security staff noticed the outline of the body on the monitor.

4  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Boko Haram: CAN President writes Clinton on: 10-08-2012 12:39 PM
The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oristejiafor, has written a letter to the visiting American Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, expressing CAN’s reservation on the manner the issues of Boko Haram and related violence by Islamist groups against Nigerian Christians are being treated by the United States.
The Letter dated July 7, 2012 which was signed on behalf of Oristejiafor by Secretary General of CAN, Rev. Musa Asake also described as inaccurate the 2011 International Religious Freedom report which catalogued the attacks on Christians and their places of worship by the Islamic sect.
According to CAN president, “Much to our dismay, the information contained in our memorandum to the presidential panel on Post-Election Violence was not included in the 2011 State Department International Religious Freedom Report. Our memo presented widespread incidents of violence targeting Christians in 12 northern states in April last year during the reporting period of the 2011 report.
“Unfortunately the destruction of over 700 churches and the systematic massacres of hundreds of Christians in 48 hours – the largest single attack on Christendom in contemporary world history anywhere on the planet-were not included in your report. Even more surprising, the report failed to accurately describe the horrific Christmas Day multi-city church attacks.
“These coordinated attacks on three states, comprising Niger, Plateau and Yobe, claimed over 60 lives and, for a second consecutive year, stunned the world. The report merely mentions the Christmas Day church bombing of St. Theresa’s Catholic church in Madalla, then fails to communicate the scope and significance of the Christmas Day attacks.
“The pernicious persecution, denigration and dehumanisation of Christians in northern Nigeria especially has been a fact of life for over a quarter century. It is therefore disconcerting that the US report addresses it in a speculative tone that undermines the harsh reality of the masses of orphans and widows left behind.”

Kenya, Ngong - A Kenyan man has sued beverage producer Coca Cola Company for damages after he drank a Coke soda only to find a condom in it after galloping almost half the drink, The Kenyan Daily Post reported.
The soda bottle was sealed before sale.

Stephen Saitoti Kasaiku, a Maasai cattle herder, presented his case before Lady Justice Florence Muchemi in Milimani Courts. In his statement, he said he bought two sodas at Ngong town and after consuming half his drink he started having stomach pains. He was later taken to hospital where he was treated for food poisoning.
Kasaiku is demanding that Coca Cola refund him the Sh. 500 that he used for treatment in the hospital. He also presented a medical report which indicated that the soda bottle he had in possession had a foreign substance - a condom. It is still not known whether it was used or unused.
The prosecutor said it is possible the bottle was not cleaned well before rebottling or it was a case of sabotage.

6  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Bakassi Group Launches Self Rule, Hoists Flag, Starts Radio Station, Declares Wa on: 10-08-2012 12:37 PM
Bakassi Self-determination Front, one of the groups leading the agitation for an independent Bakassi state has hoisted the national flag of the proposed country in the oil-rich island.
It has also established a radio station at Dayspring Island to propagate the aspirations of the envisaged nation.
The liberation flag has the colours of blue, white and red festooned with stars and flying over the landscape of Dayspring Island to the consternation of Cameroon gendarmes.
According to the group, its decision to float a radio station was part of the efforts to sensitize the people and awake their consciousness to the essence of self-determination and thus realise the ultimate goal of the struggle – self determination.
The radio station commenced transmission on August 6 at midday and operates on 4.2MHz and 5.2MHz band.
This development is coming four days after the expiration of the two-week ultimatum which the group issued its kinsmen and the Cameroonian occupiers to vacate the ceded territory or be crushed by the impending rebellion on the island.
Commander-General of the group, Ekpe Ekpenyong Oku, in his maiden broadcast to the people of Bakassi said, “Please for the umpteenth time, we plead with our people to leave Abana now. The fight is going to be the thickest and fieriest now that our brothers from the Northern and eastern borders have fully arrived. Bakassi we hail thee.”
He gave a stern warning to all travellers on the sea of Bakassi Peninsula to steer clear of the island on August 11 and 12, saying the two days were not ideal for them to navigate the coast for whatever reason.
“There will be no sea movement so that you don’t have cause to regret. There shall be no movement of boats from Ikang or Marina beach in Calabar to Cameroon on these two days. Be warned,” he said.
Furthermore, he called “on men of goodwill, individual, human rights organisations and the people of Bakassi to join hands in resisting and fighting the present international conspiracy against us.”
A statement earlier issued by him in Calabar, Cross River State capital, claimed that arrangements had been concluded with some international liberation groups to assist the Bakassi natives in the battle ahead.
“Ours will be a classical story of the elephant and the ant. The elephant will soon be driven frantic with ants all over its enormous bulk. The elephant will be so harassed and will find no respite and will dash itself against a tree trunk.
“Throughout history, injured people have had to resort to arms in their self-defence where peaceful negotiations fail. Bakassi people are no exception. Our right to self-determination is imminent; some will die, but some will live to reap from our labour,” the Commander-General stated.
It would be recalled that on July 9, 2009 following the signing of the Green Tree Agreement (GTA) in 2006, a nascent group in the now ceded territory, “Bakasssi Freedom Fighters,” had vowed to become an independent state if Nigeria surrenders sovereignty to Cameroon.
Tension had reached boiling point as the reality of the handover of the island began to dawn on the natives but ahead of the August 14, 2008 exchange of sovereignty at Government House Calabar, leader of the militant group, Tony Ene, was killed in a mysterious road accident on Calabar-Itu highway.
Ene and his group were the first to hoist the Bakassi national flag at Abana, the erstwhile headquarter of Bakassi Local Government Area with the rising sun as its symbol but the Nigerian government brought it down threatening Ene and his colleagues with arrest.
However, the government of Cameroon is said not to be resting on its oars as it has resorted to subtle diplomacy by reaching out to those that matter on the Nigerian side so that the situation does not degenerate into internecine conflict even as authorities in Yaounde have deployed more troops to Bakassi with all of them put on red alert to forestall any eventuality.

8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / The Untold story of Boko Haram Revealed on: 23-07-2012 01:59 PM
The Untold story of Gov Shettima, IGP, DSS peace talks with 11 Boko Haram commanders

Contrary to claims that the dreaded Boko Haram Islamic sect is a faceless group, Sunday Trust has exclusively gathered that there was indeed a high-level discussion between a government delegation, led by Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State and 11 field commanders of the Boko Haram, held under top secrecy and amidst intense security at the Lagos House, a government lodge for visitors, in Maiduguri.

An impeccable top security source revealed to Sunday Trust in Abuja that the meeting took place in early May 2012, at the instance of Governor Shettima. But in attendance was a representative of Inspector General of Police Mohammed Dikko Abubakar, Borno State Director, Department of State Security Service, the state’s Commissioner of Police, an intelligence officer from the military along with the state deputy governor, Mustapha Umar Zannah. All these top government functionaries were said to have been physically present at the talks.

The source told Sunday Trust that: “One of them was named Sheikh Asheku, a leader of the Boko Haram, who is believed to be a field commander.  I don’t know if he is in charge of Borno.

I think he is the one contacted by the governor’s agents. Based on an understanding, the Boko Haram leaders checked into one hotel in Maiduguri.  Asheku was the first person to check in. The others came in at different times and were moved into different rooms.  Their leader called later in the evening and disclosed their location. After that, one white air-conditioned bus was sent to them, while our security men kept surveillance, monitoring every step, in case they were up to some games.”

The source explained further that, “I learnt that initially, they were very worried for their safety,” the source continued. “I don’t know how the governor was able to convince them.  I think they just took the risk because amongst them was a wanted man.  All the security officers saw him, but there was no way he could have been arrested because the governor made everybody to agree that the sect leaders must safely leave the venue of the meeting. During the meeting, the governor interacted with them and asked them the conditions under which they would halt the bombing and killings.”
Sunday Trust learnt that the field commanders said they wanted their mosque, which was destroyed in the 2009 crisis in Maiduguri, reconstructed. They also wanted the killers of their leader Mohammed Yusuf to be prosecuted and their properties seized or destroyed by the authorities to be   returned or built back. The field commanders added further that they wanted their wives and family members who have been arrested to be released, and their freedom of worship, based on their ideology, guaranteed and respected. The Boko Haram members further demanded that their members who are under custody be released.  According to Sunday Trust’s source, the field commanders agreed to drop their arms after their Number One Imam may have been reached.

The governor was said to have promised that government could pay for every gun returned by the fighters, and that they will be trained and given funds to start any business of their choice. The governor was said to have promised that the Boko Haram mosque will be rebuilt and their houses given back to them, but as for other demands, they were beyond his office as governor of Borno State. He was said to have, however, promised to contact the president on those issues.

“But there was a problem along the line,” the source pointed out. “One of the security agencies, the JTF’s representative, was not comfortable with the talks. Maybe, they didn’t get orders from the Chief of Army or Defence Staff.  But like you know, soldiers are trained to destroy opponents. They regard anyone that carries arms against them as enemy. They are not trained to go into discussion with their enemies; they only crush. But I think the problem in Nigeria is that security agencies have no synergy.  We operate at different levels; sometimes, we even sabotage each other.  There is rivalry at all levels between soldiers and police and between police and SSS and also between SSS and the military.”

The security source remarked that “if government wants dialogue with Boko Haram, all it should do is to assure the sect leaders that their security will be guaranteed.”

Sunday Trust gathered that before the meeting, heavily armed security agents, police armoured tanks were deployed to the Lagos House,  and visitors were prevented from lodging there 24 hours to the meeting, as security officials took control of the entire building, to forestall any funny game by the Boko Haram field commanders.

Checks at the police headquarters in Abuja did not yield much fruits as no top official was prepared to speak on the issue.

11  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / How King Cash lost his throne. on: 9-07-2012 12:05 PM
Ever since anyone could remember, King Cash had always ruled Naira-Land. He was indispensible and his subjects were forced to love him because there were no viable alternatives.

On the surface, things appeared to be going smoothly, but all was not well in Naira-Land. Businesses were going under for it cost so much to carry out every single transaction in cash....

In short, King Cash was enjoying his paper throne but his people wanted something more.
The council of chiefs, known as the CBN, saw the hardship the king's rule was bringing on the people and had several meetings to find a lasting solution. After extensive consultations, they decided the best step was to break the monopoly of Cash's monarchy. That was how the Cashless policy came about.

The next day the town crier was sent around town to summon people to the village square for a very important meeting. When all were gathered, the head of the CBN, the Bashorun began the address.

"We are gathered here today because of the ugly turn our economy is taking. We all feel the pain of what's happening. The world is changing and we need to move with the times. As the CBN we cannot fold our hands while our people suffer. So after due consultations we have decided to adopt a Cashless policy in Naira-Land".

"Cashless ke? What is that?" The people asked.
"We have to stop the ghana-must-go culture of doing all business in cash", the Bashorun responded. He further explained that this Cashless policy would encourage the use of electronic transactions so that people would use less cash. He then listed the terms and conditions of the Cashless policy "Any questions?" he asked when he was done.

One by one people asked their questions; ranging from how to avoid the excess charges to the convenience of the scheme.

The Bashorun was quick to respond
"That is why we are blessed to have Otunba Quickteller here. Henceforth, he will handle all cashless transactions, bringing you ease and convenience." "So are we all in agreement?" He asked.

"Yes", the people chorused, amidst cheers.
At that same moment King Cash stormed into the arena. "What's going on here?" he demanded. "Oho, so you people have been holding secret meetings behind my back? I know everything. I am King and I will live forever!"
Otunba Quickteller stood up. "Enough. The people have spoken and we have chosen liberation from your stranglehold" he said.

"Yes, you may live forever, but your long reign as king is over. Take him away." He ordered.
"No" yelled Cash, as he was bundled away. "You can't do this. I have always ruled. This is preposterous. I am King. I WILL LIVE FOREVERRRRR"

It was jubilation all around as the people rejoiced. A new era had dawned and Naira-Land could finally catch up with the rest of the world.

Demons usually have a way of manipulating people and anyone who allows himself or herself to be carried away may not like the consequences. Below is a story making rounds on the blogosphere:

About 2 weeks ago at the Agodi area of Ibadan in Oyo State, there was this incident that rocked the environs about the death one of their neighbours. The tale happened when a Church (name withheld) in the area organized her monthly Vigil.

Among the participants were a young man and a young lady. But rather than join others to pray and praise God, they cunningly sneaked out of the church and settled in a dark corner to “enjoy themselves”.

They were busy with their unholy act when two members of the Vigilante Group in the area noticed some unusual sound and movement. So they moved a little bit closer and shout “who is there” but there was no response from the love birds.

As the drama of as asking question without response continued, one of the men got angry and shot directly at the corner. To their surprise, they heard the voice of a man groaning; as they moved closer, they found a man and a woman naked. Sadly the man died at the spot.

I hear the two vigilante members have since been arrested and are currently being detained at the Agodi Police station for murder case.
17  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / We got N7,000 to launch Biu Church attack-Boko Haram suspects on: 22-06-2012 02:01 PM
Date:  Fri, 06/22/2012 - 00:03
Seven suspected Boko Haram men alleged to have masterminded the attack on Ekklizivar Yan’uwa A Nigeria (EYN) Church in Biu, Borno State recently said they were paid N7, 000 each to carry out the attack which left no fewer than three worshipers dead.

One of the seven suspects, Ibrahim Mohammed Babangida, who spoke with journalists from his custody said one Magaji Bala, a butcher paid N7, 500 to him as his engagement fee to carry out the dastard act.

“I was sleeping in my house when Magaji called me and handed over N7,000 to me for the operation,” he said, even as one of the suspects also corroborated the claim. The suspects, Alhassan Inuwa, Ibrahim Mohammed Babangida, Magaji Bala, Nuhu Zakari, Dahiru Sa’adu, Mohammadu Nurah and Mohammed Sani told newsmen at the 21 Armoured Brigade in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, yesterday that they were butchers by profession in Biu Market and were picked up in their different houses in Biu by the JTF operatives.

The suspects also claimed to hail from Jigawa and Katsina states, adding that they came to Biu, about 187 kilometres to Maiduguri and South of Borno, to eke a living.  Some gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect had stormed a local branch of the Ekklizivar Yan’uwa A Nigeria (EYN) in Borno on June 10 in a bloody shoot out, leading to the death of three worshipers. Many others were also wounded.

Sources said the gunmen, numbering about three had invaded the EYN Church (Church of the Brethren in Nigeria) while the Sunday service was going on, killing three, including a woman while many of the members sustained various degrees of injuries from gunshot.

Meanwhile, Spokesman of the Joint Task Force (JTF), Lt Col Sagir Musa, who paraded the suspects said the task force believed the seven men were involved in the Biu Church attacks. He, however, said the security agencies in the state needed the cooperation and partnership of the people to succeed. “Handling of the security situation in the country is a collective effort and as such, security agencies should not be left with the responsibility alone. There is need for partnership because it is everybody’s problem. It is time we saw it as our problem especially in making information avalaible,” Lt Col Musa said.

Also reacting to allegation of harassment of civilians by the JTF troops, the spokesman assured that the leadership of the task force would continue to preach, sensitize and educate the personnel on the need to maintain discipline even in the face of frustration. He noted that maintaining maximum discipline among troops was one of the major challenges of any internal operation by security agents but appealed to the people for understanding.

He also urged the residents to report cases of stolen vehicles to the police or JTF, adding that the task force had uncovered plan by the Boko Haram sect to use stolen vehicles to launch attacks on some public buildings. “Information recently available to the JTF in Maiduguri indicated that there had been desperate moves by Boko Haram to steal/snatch vehicles to be used for terrorists’ activities by implanting Improvised Explosive Devices in vehicles and or through suicide bombing,” he said. He warned that owners of such stolen vehicles, “if used for terrorism acts would be treated as collaborators and accomplices.”

20  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Online Churches Flourish Amid Rising Insecurity on: 21-06-2012 03:19 PM
In times past, Christians looked forward to Sunday, the day set aside for worship.

Everyone-men, women and children-reserved their best clothes for Sunday services and everyone came out looking their best.

But this is no longer the case; Sundays are now a nightmare for many Nigerians and are looked forward to with apprehension as a result of the growing insecurity and terrorst activities in the country which appear to be targeted at Christians.

Over the last one year, there has been hardly any Sunday that passed without reports of bomb attacks in churches in the northern part of the country.

But since the beginning of June, it has become a recurring decimal-happening every Sunday.

Perhaps this is what has informed the growth of online churches, especially amongst the Pentecostal worshippers where churches can now broadcast services live on the World Wide Web. This type of internet broadcasting is commonly known as live video streaming or webcasting.

The online church is a purely internet activity whereby members of a church can follow church services live on the internet through live streaming, YouTube and other internet fora such as downloading church podcasts.

The scheduled services are streamed live and users can watch sermons without registering or can register and engage in conversations with other users. On some church websites, there are opportunities to virtually raise hand and answer questions by the internet minister

This operates in such a way that rather than appear physically in church, worshippers can log onto the church's website and participate in the church activity.

To do live streaming, a church requires a website, a camera, a computer, a media server and internet bandwidth, and experts say it doesn't cost much: with about N200,000, churches can commence live streaming of church services.

The worship method has attained a level of sophistication that offertory is also collected online through the internet banking platform where a worshipper can pay directly into the church's account using their credit card.

There are, however, a few churches in Nigeria that have adopted this method of worship, among them Daystar Christian Centre, David's Christian Centre and Christ Embassy Church.

This mode of worship was originally designed for frequent travellers who hardly have the time to go to church or those who prefer to worship at a particular church even when they are far from that location as well as those who just feel lazy and prefer to remain under the covers rather than go to church.

Others are those incapacitated by ill-health or those wishing to attend or become members of a church who may want to have a preview of their services.

With the growing insecurity and killings of Christians in churches every Sunday, many Christians, especially those in metropolitan cities where these acts of violence are most prominent, may be turning to this mode of worship.

But can this really be a solution especially for churches that have certain doctrines that require physical presence?

In the Catholic Church, for instance, there are certain integral parts of the Mass, such as Holy Communion which require the physical presence of the worshipper.

Speaking in a telephone interview, Pastor Boye Oloyede, Team Heah, Maturity, Daystar Christian Centre, said the church started online service about six years ago even though its concern then wasn't about insecurity as the country was relatively safe then, but on the realisation that its members were spread all over the world as well as the many professionals among its members whose jobs often took them out of the location of the church.

He said the platform had been successful with the church recording a daily login of about 7,000 people during its Excellence in Leadership Conference.

"We get reports from our members abroad about the fact that they gather their friends to watch the services together," he added.

Asked if he foresaw a time when the online church would take over physical church attendance, he said, "Nothing compares with being in the live service with other people but there are certain constraints that prevent people from coming together.

"If you trace the history of the early church, there were times when Christians went underground because of persecution but now, with technology, even when Christians go underground, they can be aBosom  of what is happening within the church and also commune with other worshippers but nothing can take the place of physical church attendance."

Reacting to the development, the director of communication, Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Rev. Fr. Patrick Alumunku, explained that church attendance was all about communion and the online option would be a negation of what God meant when he said He is there when two or three are gathered.

"God said where two or three are gathered He is there, and if you are alone in your room watching online, this is no longer a community.

"We can pray in our rooms individually but God has instructed us in his word to pray together as a family. Many inventions may come up but they cannot replace our union with our community and family, where we talk and listen to God together," he noted.

Speaking further, Alumunku said while the church was open to the use of the new media and also had media departments in all its formations including in the Vatican, it does not subscribe to the option of online mass.

"The church follows the media closely and is aBosom  of all the latest developments in the media, but it does not even approve watching Mass on television to replace physical presence at Mass except for those who cannot attend for reason of ill-health and incapacitation.

"There are those who have tried to ask if confessions can be done over the telephone. It would be very convenient if this could be done but it is not possible because the church has not approved that," he added.

Speaking in the same vein, Rev. Fr. Narcisse Seka Ogou of Holy Family Church Life Camp, Abuja, said that Catholic masses are sacred, requiring personal contact with Christ and full participation by an individual, just as he expressed doubts if the church would subscribe to the online option.

He noted that members of the early church also faced trials because of their faith but said it was important for Christians to remain steadfast in times of persecution rather than turn to options inimical to their faith.

"The community must gather and interact and support themselves, so online Mass or service, as the case may be, for me, would not be an option, and I don't think the church would concede to that," he said.
