62  Forum / Relationships & Romance / LWTMB: Son drags 96-yr-old father to court over plans to re-marry on: 31-05-2012 01:57 PM

A United States-based Nigerian, Emeka Mazie, yesterday dragged his 96-year-old father to court for insisting to re-marry after the demise of his wife eight years ago. The suit with number HU/54/2012 filed before the Umuahia High Court 4, is presided over by Justice Agwu Kalu. Counsel to the defendant, Miss Ebere Orji, told the court that her client, Chief Israel Mazie, and father of Emeka, had contracted a marriage with Ebere Ndubuka under the Marriage Act. She noted that his children from the late wife (Emeka’s mother)  had continued to obstruct the marriage, pointing out that his client was hale and hearty and entered the marriage with his whole mind. She maintained that the plaintiff and only son of Israel with his sisters was duly informed before the marriage was contracted but regretted that they made a u-turn to stop the union.

Counsel to the Plaintiff, Mrs Ann Uchendu, told the court that Israel and Ndubuka had yet to consummate their marriage traditionally. She pointed out that the defendants secretly obtained a marriage certificate from Bende Local Government Area of Abia State. She also told the court that Ndubuka, 40, had been boosting that she “must marry Israel under any condition”.
Kalu after listening to both counsel asked Israel why he wanted another wife. He told the parties to explore alternative means of resolving the matter peacefully in the interest of the family. “I have examined this man (Israel), even though he is old, the papers before me do not show he is either mental nor senile.

“The L.C.M. of this matter is for the parties to return home and find a more peaceful way of sorting out this matter,” Kalu said. He urged the parties to respect the views of each other, noting that at the plaintiff’s age he would never wish away his first son or the son abandon the father. Kalu added that resorting to alternative dispute resolution became imperative as there was no serious dispute to judge on the case. He adjourned the matter to October 24 for report on settlement. Israel told the court that his decision to re-marry was to get somebody to cook and assist him in keeping the compound clean. “Since my wife died eight years ago, nobody cooks or assists in cleaning the compound for me. All my children live in America,” he claimed. The plaintiff told the court that he received with shock the plans of his father to re-marry at his age. He said: “if my father must get another wife, he ought to discuss it with me.”

67  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / His Excellency launches energy saving bulbs on: 31-05-2012 08:33 AM

President Goodluck Jonathan Wednesday formally launched energy saving bulbs otherwise known as LED (light emitting diodes) with a view to encouraging Nigerians to buy the bulbs in order to reduce the cost of energy consumption in the country.

The formal launching of the bulb is a fiest step in government’s commitment to ensuring that reputable companies are persuaded to come to Nigeria to begin local production of the bulb as well as encourage local manufacturers of electricity bulbs to change to the energy saving.

president Jonathan who performed the ceremony at the presidential villa noted that ‘ the whole world is changing, they are phasing out the bulbs that emit so much heat to ones that save energy. It has nothing to do with our commitment to stabilise power in this country. We will continue to work hard to stabilise power and as we work hard, this is a big country it will take us up to a year to create the awareness across the country and we don’t need to wait until we stabilise power before we begin to talk about changing our bulbs.

“As part of the transformation agenda, it is also important for us to begin to discuss with our brothers and sisters to change some of the habits. Every nation grows and as it grows it begins to change. Only yesterday we were talking about grow local eat local and buy local, encouraging Nigerians to begin to patronize Nigerian made products.

“Today it is about power and energy. Just like telecommunication, Nigerians spend a lot time on phone making so many calls. We realize that in this country, probably because it is government that pays the bills, in public offices and houses where government pay bills, people leave light on in day time. Some places street lights will be on till 8 a.m. In some houses security light will be on in day time. This is not what is happening in other countries.

“In some countries if you move from bedroom to the sitting room you switch-off the light all is to conserve energy and also for safety reasons because it is good to off the sockets and bulbs that we are not using. These are things that we will continue to discuss. So, today we are formally launching this bulb that will reduce the cost of energy. We want Nigerians to pay very little” he noted.

The Minister of Power, Prof. Bart Nnaji, in his remarks noted that the urban poor as well as rural dwellers would especially benefit from the usage of the bulb as it would not cost them too much.
68  Forum / Relationships & Romance / A.B.U. Gay Lecturer In Soup For Toasting Male Student on: 31-05-2012 08:31 AM

A lecturer in the department of Public Administration of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Dr. Gambo Abdul has been arrested for allegedly seducing a male student Abubakar Abdulkareem to be his gay partner.

LEADERSHIP gathered the student Abubakar had severally rebuffed the advances of the lecturer who wanted him to be his gay partner but became agitated when the lecturer threatened to fail him if he refused to succumb.

It was gathered that based on the threat from the lecturer who is from Minna, that Abubakar reported the case to his parents about the move by the lecturer and the inherent threat to his academic pursuit.

Consequently, it was learnt that the family of the student decided to investigate further and later found out that their son’s claim was true.

It was further gathered that the student was instructed to play along last weekend when the said lecturer invited Abubakar into one of the suites in an hotel located at eastern bye pass Minna.

It was learnt that when the boy met the lecturer at the hotel the lecturer wanted to make advances to him, without knowing that police officers were stationed within the area. The lecturer was apprehended and taken to Chanchaga police division.

Abubakar told LEADERSHIP that his ordeal with the lecturer started over two years ago when he was doing his Diploma programme at the university, before he gained admission for his degree programme.

He explained that the said lecturer was initially like his caretaker which was why he was close to him, but only decided to stay away from him when he started to make illicit advances towards him.

He said when the situation was getting to a level of threat, especially to fail him, because he was in his department, he decided to report to his family, leading to his arrest.

When contacted, the police public relations officer, PPRO, Mr. Pius Edobo, a DSP confirmed the incident to LEADERSHIP, saying that the case would be charged to court, even as the police continue with its investigations.
69  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Man Abandons HIV Positive Wife, Baby In Hospital on: 31-05-2012 08:26 AM

A man has abandoned his wife and their new baby in a hospital and insisted that he was no longer interested in the marriage after the woman tested positive to HIV/AIDS.

The man identified as John Eze married his wife, Uloma, last year and they were living happily until she became pregnant and went for a HIV test.

When she tested positive, both of them started trading blames over who first contracted the disease.

The 29-year old woman, who was abandoned at St Michael’s Catholic Hospital, Mile 12, Lagos, claimed that her husband knew that he was HIV positive and refused to go for a test.

She said she later discovered that three women he married in the past died in similar circumstance before he married her last year.

Uloma is worried that more women will be victims if he slept with them .

But John insisted he was not HIV positive because since he married her, after sex, he usually took drink Alabukun and antibiotics for protection.

The Enugu state state-born woman said that he married her husband last year and she became pregnant same period.

She said that they did not go for HIV test until she became pregnant. She said she got to know that she had contracted HIV when she went for ante-natal care at Ikorodu General Hospital and the test was positive. She went home and told her husband and advised him to go the hospital to do a test to know his status but he refused.

“What he did was to ask me to pack my things and go to my family in the village since I was suffering from the disease,” she narrated.

She added: “when I refused to go because of the pregnancy, he started maltreating me and beating me.”

She said he later drove her out and threatened that he will kill her if she comes near his house again. Uloma said rescue came her way when an NGO, Community Health Support and Empowerment Initiative took her to a hospital where she delivered her baby.

Since then she has been in the hospital because John refused to pay her bill and take her home.

When contacted John said he was actually responsible for her pregnancy, adding that he cannot stay with her because he feels irritated since she broke the news to him.

He said the marriage was over and he was willing to take care of his baby.

On why he refused to go for a test, he said he would not go for any test for now, adding that he was took antibiotics and Alabukun whenever he had sex with her, which his wife confirmed. “My chances of testing positive are slim,” he said.

Meanwhile, their matter is being handled by the Ministry of Women Affairs at the Lagos State secretariat.
70  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / PARADISE? Nigerian travellers to UK to be screened for TB on: 30-05-2012 07:35 PM

Nigerians travelling to the United Kingdom (UK) will require pre-entry tuberculosis screening with effect  from 2013, the spokesman of the British High Commission, Mr Hooman Nouruzi, has said.

Nouruzi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja that the policy affected 67 countries listed as `tuberculosis endemic’ by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

He said that under the new scheme, travellers to the UK would be tested for tuberculosis as part of the visa procedure.

“The UK Border Agency carries out pre-entry screening for TB for non-EEA migrants who are resident in 15 countries entering the UK for six months or more.

“We are proposing to extend pre-entry screening of applicants to an additional 67 countries, which have been identified using WHO data, as having a high incidence of TB,’’ Nouruzi said.

NAN reports that the 15 nations currently being screened for TB include Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Togo, Niger, Kenya, Eritrea, Somalia, Pakistan, Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand and Laos.

Although Nouruzi was not definite on when in 2013 they will start screening Nigerians travelling to the UK, he said some hospitals would be designated for the exercise.

“We will implement the changes in phases and complete the roll out to all on the WHO high incidence list by the end of 2013,’’ he said.

NAN reports that no fewer than 10,000 UK visas are issued monthly in Nigeria, a figure which rises during the summer months of June, July and August. (NAN)
71  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigeria Gets Foreign Aid from 17 countries to Fight Boko Haram on: 30-05-2012 07:21 PM
Nigeria - While some Nigerian politicians are talking about negotiating with Boko Haram, the military is preparing for battle with the militant group.  Seventeen countries have signed on to help Nigeria increase security. The Nigerian military is acquiring new boats and helicopters and is fixing up fighter jets. In a speech in Abuja, Minster of Defense Bello Haliru Mohammed said training and re-training military personnel is a top priority, considering the security threats in Nigeria. The minister said Nigeria has signed military deals with 17 countries to help quell attacks blamed on the Islamist extremist group. The group is believed to have killed more than 1,000 people since it began violent operations in 2009, attacking churches, markets, schools, security forces, the local U.N. headquarters and newspaper offices.

Wole Olaoye, a political analyst with Nigeria's Leadership newspapers, said foreign assistance could allow Nigeria to benefit from lessons learned abroad. He said this kind of clandestine insurgency is new to Nigeria and while the government looks at security approaches and the possibility of negotiations, they also should be looking at new solutions and a greater reliance on technology. Like many Nigerians, he makes a point of saying foreign assistance will not be welcomed if it threatens national sovereignty. "I think that technology should be deployed there and it will help if those who were already on top of the situation in terms of technology offer advice, offer assistance. But if the cooperation is up to an extent where Nigeria will now play second fiddle to anybody - that I will not accept," said Olaoye.

Other analysts also say the longer Boko Haram is able to carry out attacks, the more reason the world outside Nigeria has to be worried. Political columnist Idang Alibi said if the group continues to operate inside Nigeria, it could branch out like al-Qaida. "If you allow a group like Boko Haram here it will become a base for the training of terrorists, they become more sophisticated and become a threat to other countries," said Alibi. Alibi said Nigeria also should be wary of military aid because he believes the Boko Haram threat is a result of social problems, like extreme poverty and unemployment in Nigeria’s mostly-Muslim north. He said foreign assistance should not bring more weapons into Nigeria, but help the country’s economy grow.

72  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / "Pastor Sign Fireman is A 419ner" - Enebeli Elebuwa on: 30-05-2012 06:55 PM
Some days ago, controversial man of God, Apostle Sign Fireman posted a video on video sharing site, YouTube claiming to have healed veteran actor, Enebeli Elebuwa of his partial stroke ailment he has been battling with for some months now.

The video showed Enebeli struggling to walk during the healing service done for him. The pastor thereafter claimed that in a matter of days, Enebeli would be able to walk well.

In a political programme, Focus Nigeria aired live on African Independent Television (AIT) this morning, the show's presenter, Gbenga Aruleba reported that investigation carried out reveals otherwise.

According to the report, Pa Elebuwa was interviewed and he claimed that his condition has not improved after his visit to Fireman’s church some days ago.

The report further disclosed that the actor is presently lying critically ill at an Abuja hospital, where he is currently being taken care of by Nollywood actress, Stella Damasus, who is paying the bills.

Nigeriafilms.com called a representative of Pa Enebeli, who exclusively told us that the claim by Apostle Fireman of healing Enebeli is not true. The representative told us that the video posted online should not be believed in anyway.

Nigeriafilms.com also put a call through to Stella Damasus on the story but our phone calls were not picked as at the time of publishing this story.

74  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Charles Taylor sentenced to 50 years in jail for war crimes on: 30-05-2012 11:49 AM
Judges at an international war crimes court have sentenced former Liberian president Charles Taylor to 50 years prison following his landmark conviction for supporting rebels in Sierra Leone who murdered and mutilated thousands during their country’s brutal civil war.

The Special Court for Sierra Leone found Mr. Taylor guilty last month on 11 charges of aiding and abetting the rebels who went on a bloody rampage during the decade-long war that ended in 2002 with more than 50,000 dead.
The 64-year-old warlord-turned-president became the first former head of state convicted by an international war crimes court since the Second World War.
Prosecutors asked judges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone to impose an 80-year sentence; Mr. Taylor’s lawyers urged judges to hand down a sentence that offered him some hope of release before he dies, the Associated Press reports.
Taylor will serve his sentence in a British prison.
He is expected, however, to appeal his convictions and will likely remain in jail in The Hague while the appeals process plays out.
At a sentencing hearing earlier this month, Mr. Taylor expressed “deepest sympathy” for the suffering of victims of atrocities in Sierra Leone, but insisted he had acted to help stabilize the West Africa region and claimed he never knowingly assisted in the commission of crimes.
“What I did … was done with honour,” he said. “I was convinced that unless there was peace in Sierra Leone, Liberia would not be able to move forward.”
However, judges ruled that Mr. Taylor armed and supplied the rebels in full knowledge they would likely use weapons to commit terrible crimes, in exchange for payments of “blood diamonds” often obtained by slave labour.
Prosecutors said there was no reason for leniency, given the extreme nature of the crimes, Mr. Taylor’s “greed” and misuse of his position of power.
“The purposely cruel and savage crimes committed included public executions and amputations of civilians, the display of decapitated heads at checkpoints, the killing and public disembowelment of a civilian whose intestines were then stretched across the road to make a check point, public rapes of women and girls, and people burned alive in their homes,” prosecutor Brenda Hollis wrote in a brief appealing for the 80-year sentence.
Taylor stepped down and fled into exile in Nigeria after being indicted by the court in 2003. He was finally arrested and sent to the Netherlands in 2006.
While the Sierra Leone court is based in that country’s capital, Freetown, Mr. Taylor’s trial is being staged in Leidschendam, a suburb of The Hague, Netherlands, for fear holding it in West Africa could destabilise the region.

75  Forum / Relationships & Romance / 7 things women do that drive men mad on: 30-05-2012 11:24 AM
Let's face it. It beats my imagination when most ladies intentionally and unintentionally drive men nuts. Below are seven things women do that could make a man go crazy

1. Making an anniversary out of everything: What is it with women turning the nice little things in life into a grand gift-exchanging, champagne-popping ceremony? We return home from a normal day at work to be met with a candle-lit dinner and an expensive looking gift but, quite frankly, it makes our heart stop. Have you done something wrong? Is it your birthday? My birthday? Oh silly me, it’s the anniversary of the first time we looked at each other. Please refrain from doing this, ladies. We have a hard enough time getting event dates right without being shouted at for not buying the dog a card to celebrate the anniversary of his first vaccination.

2. Piling the bed with cushions: One would be mistaken for thinking that a bed is for sleeping in. We go to get our head down for the night, only to find the bed piled sky-high with strategically placed cushions that leave no room for us. What’s more, only a couple of these cushions actually have a purpose. We don’t need the tiny heart-shaped one or the big fluffy one that makes us sneeze – just a normal pillow to rest our head on will suffice. We don’t adorn the bed with DIY tools and model cars, so please tame your OCD (Obsessive Cushion Disorder) and stop making an elaborate display out of our bed so we can get down to the important stuff.

3. Asking us what we’re thinking: It’s a classic example of how women like to test us, and possibly trick us into making the cardinal sin of admitting that we weren’t thinking about her at that particular moment. One minute we’re enjoying a cuddle, the next they’re hurling that question at us when we’re least expecting it. They say it so fast that we don’t have chance to make up a false reply or even to think straight, which leads us to stutter and then be accused of thinking of our ex. Asking what we’re thinking is basically a nice way of saying ‘you aren’t allowed to have private thoughts, unless they’re about me’.

4. Saying ‘I’m fine’, when you’re not happy: So she stood in front of the television while the football was on, we got a bit iffy and snapped, and now all sorts of issues have been bought up. Then she says it – that passive-aggressive statement that marks the start of the dreaded silent treatment: “I’m fine”. Erm, are you really fine because you’ve just screamed at us until you’ve gone red in the face, and now you’re laying face down on the bed crying. If you’re unhappy just outline the problem and then we can sort it out and carry on as normal. Or – even better – don’t outline the problem and let us watch the football in peace.

5. Using sex as a weapon: One of the most annoying things that a woman can do is deny her man of segxwal privileges. Some women seem to take great pleasure in using our weakness to their own advantage through the classic ‘if you don’t do this, we’re not having sex’ scenario. If you’re going to stop us from doing one thing, please don’t let it be sex. We don’t stop you from eating and drinking, so please don’t mess with our basic human needs either.

6. Being over-emotional: You cry at funerals, you cry at weddings, you cry at happy films, you cry at sad films. This makes us feel awkward because we just don’t know what to say or do when you’re sat sobbing all over our freshly ironed shirt. Where do all these tears come from? We think women should just have an annual crying day where they get together and cry for twenty four hours, before coming home and being normal for the other 364 days of the year. It would solve a lot of our problems.

7. Incessant talking: We’ve heard that women are estimated to say around 20, 000 words a day – which is an awful lot compared to the paltry 7, 000 estimated for men – so we understand that she needs to get her daily nattering fix, but why is it always at the most inappropriate times? She was quiet all the way through the family dinner when we needed her to break the awkward silence, but as soon as we start getting to the competitive part of a multi-player game with our friends, she just won’t shut up about how cute the neighbour’s cat looks when it sits next to the rose bush. To make it even more annoying, the actual part of the story she was getting at whilst rambling on about the neighbour’s cat, was that the cat’s owner now works at the grocery store down the road. Ladies, if you’re going to talk, pick the right moment and please, just get to the point.

80  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / WTF: Northern Elite Own Three-Quarters of the Country's Oil Blocks on: 29-05-2012 07:43 PM

LAWYER to Governor Patrick Yakowa , Ustaz Yunus (SAN) has alleged that three-quarters of the Nigeria's oil blocks are owned by northern elite, who have refused to help the poor children and the Almajiris that have constituted security challenges to the nation.

Yunus said this in an interview in Kaduna during the distribution of food, foot wears and toilet soaps to over 200 Almajiris to mark this year's children's day by a group of lawyers in his law chambers under the aegis of Advocates of the Nigerian Child (ADVOPUER).

In his words : 'Let me tell you, three quarter of the oil blocks and oil wealth are owned by northerners, but these are the people that cannot even help the poor child with 1 kobo. So, that is just the reasons they roam the streets and get exposed to so many vices'.

He lamented that this attitude of the northern elite is nothing but selfishness amplified by corruption because according to him, 'these money is ill-gotten,but it is the common wealth that these people have confiscated and still refused to inject it into the economy.

'Our northern big men have always been too selfish. They carried all our money to further develop Europe. That is just all. The way forward is to curb corruption by ensuring that somebody who is not corrupt is at the helm of affairs because a corrupt leader cannot curb corruption'.

He observed further that 'the major cause of insecurity is not the Almajiri system, but the northern wealthy people who have stolen all our money and instead of investing internally to generate revenue, they take it to Europe.'

For example, when Arewa Textiles Factory was working, the parents of these children were not begging and they could be catered for by their parents.

I thought the Oil is the South, but the Northern Elites still seem to be in control. It reminds me of the popular maxim, "Monkey dey work, Baboon dey chop"
