1  Forum / Sports / Emmanuel Eboue: Eagles surprised us on: 4-02-2013 02:17 PM
Ivory Coast midfielder defender Emmanuel Eboue says his side were surprised by the style and determination of the Super Eagles in Sunday’s quarterfinal in Rustenburg.

Tournament favourites Ivory Coast were upset 2-1 by a young Nigerian side at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, and Eboue says his side were left stunned.

“I have to say Nigeria surprised us. The way they played, the way they passed the ball. They defended as a team and did not break their formation. I have to give credit to Stephen Keshi and Daniel Amokachi for the kind of team they have built.”

Eboue, who has been the subject of controversy because of tweets from an impostor, says he wishes the Super Eagles the best.

"I think they are good enough to win it if they play like this and I wish them all the best.

"They are my brothers and I would never say bad things about them. That person has been doing that for a long time. I don't have twitter or Facebook. I only use Skype."

This will never work, all politicians in Nigeria pursue permanent interest, this alliance or gang-up is bound to fail.It didn’t work in the past because personal interest overrides national political .These people are the same people that rule Nigeria in the past.which of them have never held government office among the gang of mergers?.they all became rich and Nigerians became poor and now they are ganging up against Nigerians to finish what they started…how long have we been hearing of Buhari,Tinubu and the likes of them?.more than 20 years so please if they have not been able to change Nigeria for good for all these years, what can they do in 4 years? same old wine in a new cup. We can't afford to fly from the frying pan to fire. This so called merging is so disorganized that I am sure they cannot articulate what the nation needs…

Good point ,We don't need mobocracy government any more .

Lawyers saying it would be immoral to defend the culprits are not being professional. Its like a doctor who says he won't treat an injured criminal. The state would charge and accuse the culprits according to the law, and punish them according to the law, if found guilty. The lawyers' duty is to ensure that the law is applied accordingly and correctly. And when it is, then they can sleep without guilt, the state would charge and accuse the culprits according to the law and punish .them whatever the outcome of the case
They say its immoral because they can't say they are afraid.

Am never in support of negotiating/payment of ransom to kidnappers and Boko Haram or any group. Paying ransom of whatever amount would promote and encourage this crime. Once we turn our nation into a ransom paying nation, with lots of youth out of job, Nigeria would be a very dangerous place to live, life would no longer be save for anyone, people would be living in fear. How long will all these menaces continues,Boko raham and kidnappers.its not fair to kidnap the old woman, lets respect old age. This woman have contributed her quota to the growth of the economy and retired.A lot of people have benefited from her wealth of knowledge and excelled in life. Let’s not judge her with whatever grievance whoever have against Ngozi.most commentators on this event had blamed hunger in the land with its roots in actions of the government of which Ngozi is a principal player.Nigeria is turning into a country that is forced to negotiate with criminals and groups of hoodlums that hold the government to ransom.they should remember if ransom is paid ,they are legalizing criminal act.

True talk jare ,The comments of some people in this forum is unfortunate, to say the least. How can somebody directly or indirectly approve of Kidnapping, because the leaders are corrupt. Why kidnap an 82 years old woman that had worked hard to attain a Professorial position.

This man has committed a coup in the 95 and has been on power since then.He said that God has made him president of Gambia. Before Gambia did not have an army, but got help from Senegal to train new soldiers to prevent a coup against the former Gambian president Dawda Jawara, who died later.president Jammeh took this opportunity to enlist, then he committed a coup. Now he is the worst dictator in the West Africa.Gambians should blame England and all western nations that keep pouring money into the dictator Jammeh pocket and bank accounts. He just said to the West that he is free to do whatever he want in Gambia. He has been killing all his opponents,In addition,he jailed innocent people.Ironically ,he has foreign corrupted mercenary Nigerian judges.Imagine that.ECOWAS has dictators within ,such as president Blaise Compaore of Burkina Fasso and president Jammeh of Gambia.

Yes you're right.Chief judge of the Gambia is a Nigerian but he was paid to obey all commands from president and fellow instruction as  Mr .Jammeh directed .in this case Jammeh is a worst dictator same with president Blaise Compaore of Burkina Fasso.

17  Forum / Politics / El-Rufai to Jonathan: Quit if you can’t solve Nigeria’s problems on: 8-08-2012 10:41 PM
ABUJA—As the spate of violence escalates, particularly in the North, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to quit if he could not solve the growing security threats to lives and property in the country.

In an exclusive interview with Vanguard yesterday, el-Rufai said it was indefensible for the government to allow innocent souls to be slaughtered daily without any response from the administration. El-Rufai spoke against the backdrop of Chief Edwin Clark’s assertion that northern leaders were not doing enough to curtail the Boko Haram sect, apparently to bring down the administration.

El-Rufai and Jonathan

While dismissing Clark’s allegation as untenable, the former minister warned the elder statesman to desist from making inflammatory and unverified statements capable of exposing him to ridicule instead of applause that he deserves at his age.

El-Rufai also asked the former federal information commissioner to desist from insulting northern leaders at the slightest opportunity.

According to him, Jonathan has already made it clear to Nigerians and the international community that the gale of bombings in the land was beyond the capability of his administration to handle, a situation, he described as unfortunate. He stated that other Nigerian heads of state had at different times and periods been confronted with serious challenges and they deployed appropriate state apparatus to deal with them without resorting to wrong quarters and the ordinary citizens for help. “Why is it that only President Jonathan cannot solve Nigeria’s security problem? el-Rufai asked.

“If he cannot do the job for which he was elected to do, he should consider going home. No president has ever sought the help of the ordinary people in tackling security problems in this country.

“The protection of lives and property of the citizens is the basis of any government in power and if the leadership has failed woefully to deploy the resources and information at its disposal to enforce coercive power for the benefit of the society, then it had no reason to stay on,” he stated.

He said the current situation in the country had made many Nigerians to be worried about the future of the country, warning that if urgent steps were not taken to reverse the dangerous trend, the country could be plunged into a deeper crisis.

On the controversy over the implementation of the budget, the former minister maintained that if the budget had worked, it would have brought some relief to the ordinary citizens who had almost been choked by the economic stagnation in the country. “Yes, all of us would have seen the results if the budget had been well implemented. A good economic system shows in the quality of lives of the people and does not end on the pages of newspapers,” he added. The former minister said the finance minister alone cannot change the current gloomy economic outlook in the country, as a tree cannot make a forest.

On the allegations that he was making noise preparatory to contesting the presidential election in 2015, he cautioned those making the claims to wait for 2015, pointing out however, that he was qualified to do so if he wanted.
18  Forum / Politics / Odumosu, Oke raise hope for Nigeria on: 8-08-2012 10:37 PM

It may be our day of glory,” was the simple way Technical Director of Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Navy Captain Omatseye Nesiama described today.

Blessing Okagbare  last night failed to qualify in the Long Jump event as she jumped 6. 34m.

Ajoke Odumosun and Tosin Oke

Before then two other Nigerians qualified for the final of their events today. Nigeria has never had it so good in these London Games.

Ajoke Odumosu had pushed in the race of her life to set a national record in the Women’s 400m Hurdles event. She finished first in her semi-final heat with a time of 54.40 secs and

yelled “I’m feeling good. This is great.”

On getting to the finish line Ajoke screamed, celebrating her feat.”I’ll give it the shot of my life,” she said of the final today.

Tosin Oke jumped 16.83 to place 9th in the Triple Jump. 12 jumpers are in the final.

The jumpers did not generally have a good day here. Christian Taylor of USA won the World Championship with a 17.96 jump.

“I think it will be our day of glory,” Nesiama said, referring to the way Ajoke powered home to win her event. She is now enjoying rave previews but the Nigerian camp is being careful in order not to mount pressure on her.

Blessing Okagbare ran the 100m final carrying the weight of 160 million Nigerians. She cracked. And out of the blues(in terms of global standard) came Ajoke Odumosu who has shown great prospect of winning a medal here.

“I think Ajoke is up for a medal,” said Mark Ouma, a reknowned athletics writer from Kenya
19  Forum / Politics / 2015: Igbo presidency untested option for good governannce – Okonkwo on: 28-07-2012 11:45 AM

PRESIDENT of C-21, an Igbo socio-political group, Senator Annie Okonkwo has declared that for the much needed Igbo presidency to be a reality in the next dispensation, indigines of the South East must quit being used to scuttle the common dreams of the region.

He also noted that Igbo presidency remains the only untested option for the desired good governance in Nigeria.

Briefing newsmen yesterday in Lagos, Okonkwo noted that his group was poised, to revolutionise the quest for Igbos to occupy the mainstream of Nigerian politics.

According to him, “A strategic and decisive pitch for the Nigerian Presidency of Igbo extraction should no longer be an issue for bedroom or lunch date sentimental posturing and lamentation, but rather the most singular defining redemption for Nigeria’s political and moral fairness as a corporate entity.

This  cannot be seen as a low hanging fruit without sacrificial selfless unity  by the lgbos themselves.”

He further said, “Now which of these zones have not had the opportunity of Nigeria’s presidency, it is  the South East. Which of  these zones have less number of states and local governments? Ironically, which of these zones have been more supportive developmentally and politically to others? Of course, the South East.”

In addition, he said, “the democratic foundation to realize high stake political aspiration is best laid on honest and rigorous negotiation across board. The time has come for us to come together, negotiate together and advance our views and arguments together, in the same resolute character that have inspired our successes as a blessed people.

The C21 will do all that can possibly be done to chart a course of sustainable political unity and social harmony  amongst our politically endangered people. No sacrifice will be too much and resource will be spared in this regard.

20  Forum / Politics / Dasuki meets Boko Haram leaders soon on: 5-07-2012 11:54 AM
Jos —The new National Security Adviser (NSA) retired Col. Sambo Dasuki assured yesterday that he will soon meet with Boko Haram leaders for possible dialogue with the group, saying he already had their contacts.

Dasuki, who spoke in Jos during a meeting with stakeholders in Plateau, said he was planning to meet with the group on the need for it to cease fire and embrace dialogue as soon as possible.

“I was in Yobe and Borno States last week and I have got the telephone numbers and contacts of key Boko Haram members and I will meet with them. I saw the dangerous effect of Boko Haram in these states and what I saw was pathetic. But I have the mandate to put heads together with religious and traditional leaders as well as the state governments to ensure an immediate ceasefire,” Dasuki said.

According to him, he was in Plateau State for on-the-spot assessment of the security challenge and in furtherance of the Federal Government’s peace efforts, particularly across the northern part of the country.

He expressed confidence that the people of Plateau could put their problems behind them and forge ahead with genuine peace and reconciliation.

“I have a stake in Plateau because I lived in Pankshin and Jos when my father resided here. So if we lived peacefully way back then, it is possible to go back to those good old days.

“Before now, it was difficult for me to believe that you could see a Fulani and Berom man together on the street of Plateau fighting. But the presence of various ethnic and religious groups at this parley is a pointer to the fact that we want to forge ahead.”

The Security Adviser also promised to work with state governors in finding solutions to the security problems in the country. He said that he believed working with governors who know the peculiar security situations of their states would achieve better results than working with individuals.

“They (governors) are the chief security officers of their respective states. Our job is to complement. If there is peace, there would be less burden in Abuja. We will not work with individuals but the governors”, Dasuki who spoke at a meeting with various interest groups at the Government House, Rayfield, Jos, said.

He solicited cooperation of various stakeholders for the success of his assignment and appealed to the people to put aside past anomalies and work together towards attaining peace in the state and the country at large. He promised to look into allegations of the involvement of some security personnel in crises in the states but noted that keeping a soldier away from his base beyond six months could be frustrating.

After listening to various stakeholders, he promised to discuss with the Presidency on lifting the state of emergency declared in four local government areas of the state.

In his remarks, Gov. Jonah Jang regretted that the emergency rule in the state had not achieved the intended effect as the attacks on the affected local government areas had continued unabated.

On dialogue with Boko Haram, Jang said that it was difficult to dialogue with the group since its leaders and members were not known.

He therefore urged the group to come out and identify itself. “We only hear that Boko Haram claims responsibility for this and that attack but we never heard anybody coming out to say he is Boko Haram. We know the Niger Delta militants had leaders and a cause they were fighting for which made late President Yar’Adua to succeed with the amnesty programme but, who is Boko Haram?”

Jang alleged that some influential people were behind the sect in view of the sophistication of its operations and insisted that the sponsors must be dealt with by the appropriate authority.

In his remarks, a member of the House of Representatives, Bitrus Kaze, alleged insincerity and lack of will on the part of the government to implement various reports on Jos crises.

“In the last 10 years, no single person has been convicted for the crisis on the Plateau.

“So what you have is a situation whereby the assailants have become hardened and continued to carry on with the attacks with impunity. ”

The parley had in attendance, traditional, religious and community leaders, heads of security services, women, youth groups, and government functionaries, among others.
