82  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / CREEPY! CBN makes money from dirty naira notes in circulation on: 12-04-2014 03:24 PM

Nigerians may continue to spend dirty and mutilated notes if findings by Saturday Punch are anything to go by. Nigeria’s currency, the Naira, in all its denominations, has been severely mutilated, overused and over-circulated such that it has become an issue of luck to come across a clean note. However, Saturday Punch learnt that the scarcity of the clean notes is due, in part, to the fact that the Central Bank of Nigeria has refused to recycle the old notes while it imposes charges on commercial banks that want to change the dirty notes to cleaner ones, thereby turning it into a money-making practice. Access to clean notes is now by luck, special request with pleas and sometimes, financial inducement and purchase from sellers who have taken to the streets to sell the clean notes to legitimate customers who have no access to them. Many Nigerians wonder why the CBN has refused to withdraw the bad notes from circulation and replace them with clean ones. A cross section of bank workers who spoke to our correspondent alleged that the CBN has refused to recycle bad notes because it makes a lot of money from the dirty notes in circulation. They alleged that the CBN imposes a charge on commercial banks when they return dirty notes for replacement. A senior executive in one of the new generation banks, who pleaded anonymity, said that the CBN charges N12,000 flat rate on each box of naira notes the commercial banks take to the CBN for exchange to clean notes, regardless of the denomination. “No commercial bank wants to take responsibility for the dirty notes that it did not give out because CBN imposes a charge on returned notes. That is why banks do not want to collect bad notes from customers again and it is one of the reasons the bad notes are everywhere. “Sometimes you see the notes and you won’t be sure if it’s the same naira or a bleached note for scientific experiment.” However, another source said the amount being charged by the CBN was 5% of the total amount taken for exchange. A teller in a commercial bank, Mr. James, wondered why the CBN compels banks to pay for replacing what they did not spoil. He described it as an exploitative act by the CBN to make money. “A bank with so many dirty notes in stock is forced to go and change them because if you give them to the customers, they reject them. If you load them in the Automated Teller Machines, the machines push them to reject bin or even tear them in some cases,” he said. James said that even though the money that the CBN charges appears small, it is not something that the commercial banks are willing to part with, more so that some staff members of the CBN make money from selling the much-needed  clean notes to street sellers. A cash management officer in another commercial bank, Miss Chime (not real names), said the charge on the exchange prevents commercial banks from changing notes for customers. “What the CBN charges for exchange of bad notes to clean ones is half of the total value of the notes. Ideally, a customer should be able to enter any bank with a dirty note and get it changed into a cleaner one but it doesn’t come that easy again because of the imposed fee. “In fact,  in my own bank, tellers have been instructed not to change notes for people unless it’s a withdrawal. “If you take dirty notes worth N10m to the CBN, it would deduct half of it which is N5m as commission and it makes us wonder why the apex bank should make us pay for its responsibility.” A top executive in a foremost commercial bank who preferred to be anonymous said, “Yes, CBN charges commercial banks on the exchange of dirty notes to new ones, but the money is minimal which is not enough to deter banks from approaching it even though it’s a loss in profit. “The thing is that CBN is not printing new notes as often as it should. I have also heard that CBN sells mint to banks but I cannot substantiate that allegation. “CBN is the only statutory regulatory body that has the responsibility of recycling money; removing bad notes  from circulation and printing new ones, but we find out that we have bad notes in circulation for a long time which should not be so.” He refused to disclose how much the CBN charges but admitted that it was wrong for the apex bank to impose charges on commercial banks who want to change bad notes into good ones and that the apex bank should not let notes circulate for so long in spite of the cost of printing. “Fairly, what I believe to be part of the issues is that the cost of printing the notes is very huge; it’s almost like the cost of the notes you are printing. Maybe that is the reason why CBN is rationalising printing the notes, but we also don’t know why it prefers to import our currency,” he said. However, due to the crave and increasing demand for clean notes by the citizenry for various reasons, most people who are in need of the clean notes resort to buying them on the streets. The naira has become an object of trade in many places, as people now sell the clean notes on the street, usually at major parks, garages and parties. Visits by our correspondent to many parks within the Lagos metropolis revealed that Nigerians now patronise the hawkers on the street to get clean notes, an act which the CBN described as unlawful. Investigations revealed that people pay as much as N200 on every N1,000 clean notes, regardless of the denomination. Even though most of the money-changers approached by our correspondent said that N50 clean notes have not been available since last year, other denominations are available in surplus. In a chat with our correspondent, one of the hawkers at the popular Oshodi park, who gave his name as Baba Tosin, said most of the people who come to them to change money request for the lower denominations such as N50, N100 and N200. “On every N1, 000, we charge N200, even if you need N100, 000, we would change it for you. It is just that N50 note has not been available for some time now. Also, if the notes are used ones, the amount payable on every N1, 000 is N100. “The only challenge is that N50 had been scarce since last year, because there is higher demand for it than other denominations which had led to its scarcity. “Most people who spray at parties prefer N50 note because it is economical,” he said.  At the popular Obalende park in Lagos Island, one of the naira notes hawkers who spoke to our correspondent, on the condition of anonymity for fear of being hunted and humiliated, gave the same amount as the cost of the exchange. On further enquiry, he said that the main source of their supply is the CBN while they use commercial banks as a secondary source. “Supply from the CBN is more reliable, consistent and readily available because they are in charge of the issuance of notes, but we also get the new notes from commercial banks. We have people who buy from the banks and supply us. “We also buy from them and we pay between N100 and N150 on every N1,000. We have to make some profit, that is why we sell at N200 on every N1,000.” Tina, a money-changer at Iyana Ipaja (Lagos) park, also gave the same rate of N200 on every N1,000. When our correspondent asked if she could change N50,000 to mint, she said, “Even if you have more, you will get it. I have it.” Asked how she gets the new notes, Tina said that that there are middle-men who buy the notes from the banks and sell to them. “It is a chain-like business. We have some big people who buy the notes from both the CBN and commercial banks in large quantities, they sell to us and we sell to our customers. “The thing is that the CBN is our main source because commercial banks do not have the clean notes in commercial quantity, hence, they can’t meet our demand. If you go to commercial banks, you would see tellers and other staff members scrambling to keep the notes anytime they come across them. “Because of issues like confidentiality and security, we are not allowed to get direct supplies. Besides, CBN is not a place anybody can enter, so we don’t even know the top officials who supply us, but we get the supply unhindered which is more important. Tina, however, refused to disclose how much they pay their suppliers for the new notes but assured our correspondent of steady supply anytime there is need for it. Findings revealed that most of the hawkers who have the notes in large quantities get them from the CBN while those who need money to spray at parties get them from commercial banks. Even though CBN recently denied the allegation that its members of staff sell naira notes, the hawkers who confided in our correspondent said they get the large chunk  of the new notes from the CBN while the remaining comes from the commercial banks, all through informal means. It was also learnt that concerned bank officials who sell the notes would prefer to sell to the hawkers and make money than make them available to the customers at no extra cost. Our correspondent learnt, on further enquiry, that the hawkers or their middlemen have links with some senior staff members of the CBN and the Cash Management Units of the commercial banks. One of them told our correspondent that it is not possible for the hawkers to operate without an insider who may likely be a senior staff member because not all bank workers have access to cash or its reserve in the bank. While some banks have their CMU at the headquarters, some have them at the branch level. A senior member of staff in one of the new generation banks, Mr. Seyi Aliu, said, “While it may be harder for those who have their CMU at the headquarters to sell new notes, it is easier for those who have their CMU at the branches to sell but the CBN is their best shot because that is where all notes come from; it issues the notes. “All the cash coming into a bank, including from the CBN, is received at the CMU, from where they may be sent to other places. Hence, the officials in the unit have access to the notes than other bank workers. “Even though the deposit at the end of each day would pass through them, they hardly get mint from deposits. Even if it comes, the tellers in the banks are also Nigerians who love to spend clean notes. They could have changed it for personal use which is not a crime.” Also, another banker, Tosin, who claimed to be in the know, said that it had to do with knowing the right persons at the CBN and the Cash Management Unit of the commercial banks. “Once the hawkers have insiders either directly or through some middlemen, they would pay the equivalent of what they need and the cost of purchase into the banker’s account, who would supply them the clean notes through an agreed method. “Some people even pay ahead so that when the clean notes are available, they would be assured of getting something because there is also competition. “The hawkers have more than one source and that is why they always have enough stock. Some have sources in the CBN and some in the commercial banks, and it is a very secret deal.” Tosin added, “It is common practice for bank executives to instruct the workers at the cash management unit to reserve a certain amount of clean notes for them and no one would dare touch the mint. “In fact, sometimes we are instructed to separate the box containing the mint so that we don’t tamper with it either intentionally or by mistake. It is only when the boss who hands down the instruction comes that we touch the box, and we give him whatever amount he needs.” Reasons for dirty notes Findings showed that many reasons could be responsible for the dirty notes in circulation. These range from poor maintenance culture, over-used notes, non-renewal of circulated notes to intentional mutilation. A senior bank executive who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity decried the poor maintenance attitude of some Nigerians. “The thing is that when we have a clean culture as it obtains in other countries, then we will start to have clean notes. The users will always use the notes anyhow but it is the responsibility of the government to recycle the notes and educate the users on how to keep them clean. “In other words, the over-circulation of the notes could be responsible for the bad ones. By the time a note spends a year or more in circulation, moving from one hand to the other, it could wear out.” He identified the persistence of Nigerians to spraying money at parties as inimical to sustaining the flow of clean notes. However, medical experts have advised members of the public to wash their hands thoroughly after handling money to prevent infectious diseases, as paper currency could aid transfer of germs. According to an online report culled from [email protected], money germs come from sweaty back pockets, food covered bills, floors, stripper G strings, drug exchanges, casinos, and dirty people. Close observation revealed that if the CBN issues clean notes, when people spray them at parties; they step on them and rub them against hard surfaces which wear them out. Some hold them with dirty hands, some keep them in unhygienic places such as inside the bras (as reported by Saturday PUNCH recently) and engage in other unpleasant practices.” Saturday PUNCH observed that some people have converted the naira into jotters where they write their plans, names, calculations, even people eating oily foods still handle the naira with the dirty hands, hence the note becomes dirty. Some shrink the notes, fold them in their hands, some put them in their wet pockets, bras while some squeeze them in nylons. Though Sections 20 and 21 of the CBN Act of 2006 stipulate how the naira should be handled, not much attention has been given to adherence to the instructions. However, the commercial banks have also claimed that most of the cash they get from the CBN are not clean, hence it is the same dirty notes they get that they pay to the customers, either on the counters or through the ATMs. Some bank officials however said they do not pay to get mint from the CBN. “The only thing is that we apply for mint to be included in the cash they supply to us and we apply formally for it. “Most times, what you get is below what you apply for, which gives an impression that the clean notes are not available or some people are hoarding them for their personal interest,” one of them told Saturday PUNCH. A teller in a commercial bank, Toyin Oluseun, said, “If we have some new notes remaining after all the sharing and deductions from the top, the tellers and other bank staff also help themselves with some. “Even bankers are on the lookout for new notes. A customer once brought clean notes (the one people call ‘untouch’) of N40,000 in N200 denomination for deposit. He told me that if he had other notes that were not clean, he would have changed them. The moment he left, my colleagues and I shared the notes and replaced them with our tattered notes. In fact, they were giving me signs before he left.” It was also observed that the scarcity could also be due to hoarding by customers who, sometimes, sweat to get them. Old notes, ATMs and endless queues Investigations by Saturday PUNCH revealed that the rejection of some naira notes by the Automated Teller Machines could partly be responsible for the endless queues at the various ATM centres/points. A customer care executive who handles ATM complaints in a commercial bank spoke to our correspondent. She said, “The quality of the cash loaded in the ATM matters as it determines how fast the reject bin which collects and stores bad notes fills up. “The bin has the capacity to store about N300,000 at a time, once it is filled up, the machine would stop working, that is when you see ‘temporarily unable to dispense cash’ or ‘cash jam’ on the display screen. “So there would be need to empty the bin. That is one of the reasons why some of the machines don’t work at weekends; not that we don’t put money inside, the bin may be full. But if you have clean notes, the machines rarely develop faults, apart from network problem. “And because of the non-availability of the new notes, banks tend to recycle the bad notes and put them in ATMs, which causes cash-jam, and sometimes the notes get torn in the machines.” At an event in Lagos recently, the Director, Sales and Strategy, Inlaks Computers, Mr. Tope Dare, lamented that the CBN had not been giving out good notes which affected the performance of ATMs until his company was able to recalibrate its ATMs to accept bad notes. When a former Governor of CBN, Prof. Charles Soludo, insisted that people should treat the national currency with respect, he was criticised by some Nigerians who said spraying money at parties was a part of Nigerian culture. Investigations also revealed that new notes are now being sold, hawked and sprayed at major parties in defiance of the law. It was also observed that the rejection of dirty notes and the ones with irregular shapes by many Nigerians have been a subject of conflict between traders, customers, commuters and passengers in any transaction that involves exchange of naira notes. Comparatively, many countries do not have as many bad notes as we have in Nigeria due to their effective cashless policy which limits cash carriage and cash-dependent transaction. Such countries’ clean bill policy is  also designed to give the citizens good quality currency notes while the dirty notes are withdrawn out of circulation. When contacted on the phone, the Director, Corporate Communications, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Ugochukwu Okoroafor, said he could not comment on the issue because he was attending a lecture. “I can’t comment on that now because I’m not in the office. I’m on a course, so you can speak to the deputy director, though he went on assignment to Washington,” he said. When the Deputy Director, Corporate Communications, Mr. Isaac Okoroafor, was  contacted, he asked our correspondent to send an electronic mail on the issue. But as of press time, he had yet to send a reply. The Central Bank of Nigeria had, in May 2013, explained that it was committed to operating a clean note policy, and that deposit money banks and other customers will only be paid in clean notes made up of processed and mint notes. The apex bank said that it had established channels of distribution through which it disburses clean naira notes to all deposit money banks licensed to operate in Nigeria. In spite of its refutation of reports that it is responsible for the artificial scarcity of new naira notes, staff members of commercial banks, hawkers of the notes and many Nigerians who spoke to our correspondent have pointed accusing fingers at the apex bank.

83  Forum / The Buzz Central / Stella Damasus Doesn't Believe That Jesus Had A Wife on: 12-04-2014 03:01 PM

Actress Stella Damasus reacts to recent discovery of a fragment of papyrus where is said that Jesus had a wife.
According to a Harvard professor, an ancient papyrus, which is written in Coptic and contains a dialogue in which Jesus refers to "my wife," has been tested and it was revealed that the document isn't a forgery.
But Stella Damasus is sure that if there is nothing about Jesus's marriage in the Bible then it's not true. And she pities that all that intelligent people instead of finding cure for HIV and cancer trying to discredit the word of God.
Here what she wrote on her Instagram page: "If it's not written in the bible I won't let any confused person tell me crap e.g "Jesus is married". Wish they would use all their intelligence and resources to find a permanent cure for HIV and cancer, instead of constantly looking for ways to discredit the word of God."
Do you agree with Stella Damasus?

BREAKING CELEBRITIES SHOCKING NEWS
86  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / LOBATAN: Pastor Drops Dead Conducting Funeral Of Herbalist on: 12-04-2014 11:59 AM
The sleepy town of Asaga-Ohafia in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State has been thrown into a deep shock and controversy following the death of a cleric who dropped dead while conducting the burial service of a renowned herbalist.
Saturday Sun gathered that Pa Oji Okoko, who was not only a notable herbalist but a leader of some powerful cult groups such as Uke Abaa, Akpan and Ekpe, had warned his family before his death that his corpse should not to be taken to any church for funeral. However, his burial few days ago was turned to a show of power in the community torn between two religions: Christianity and idolatry.

Findings showed that the man at the centre of the controversy, the late Pa Okoko, a native of Nde Uduma Ukwu compound in Eziukwu village, Asaga, Ohafia in Ohafia local council, was a great hunter, a farmer and native doctor of repute. Being a member of several traditional and cult groups in his community like Uke Abaa, Akpan and Ekpe, Pa Okoko, before his death at the age of 104 years, was said not to have entered any church in his life time.
A polygamist married to six wives that bore him 26 children, Okoko was said to have called his first son, Kalu Oji Okoko along with others at a point when he knew he was nearing his grave and warned not to deposit his corpse in any mortuary when he dies and never to take him to any church or conduct any Christian funeral for him.
It was learnt that the order was to ensure that his traditional group members, particularly the Ekpe society, would conduct his burial ceremonies and rites. Pa Okoko’s children and close relations reportedly acceded to the latter request but pleaded with him to rescind his decision on the former, in the sense that putting him in the morgue when he breathed his last would afford members of his Ekpe group and others enough time to prepare well for his burial. This he accepted, but taking his body to any church was no-go area.
Saturday Sun gathered that when Pa Okoko eventually died last month, his children decided to respect his wish by depositing his corpse in a morgue in the area but were not interested in organising a church funeral service in his honour. Trouble, however, started when the maternal side of the deceased’s family on whose shoulders Igbo customs place much of the burial responsibility prevailed on the children and close relations of the late centenarian that  church service be conducted for him. In order not to give room for any hiccup during the burial, as according to custom, the maternal family members could disrupt the ceremonies if their opinion was not factored in, some of the children of the deceased acceded to the request.
Courting trouble
Ahead of the burial ceremony on Saturday, March 29, 2014, the family was said to have contacted a pastor of one of the churches in the area who agreed to officiate at the funeral.
So, on the day of the burial, the Obu (native hall) near the Ikoro ukwu Asaga where the body of the late centenarian was laid in state was decorated to suit the occasion. When the corpse arrived from the mortuary, it was reportedly taken to the inner sanctuary of the Ekpe society where parts of his body were robbed with the symbolic Uhie before he was brought out for the open-air interdenominational church service. But before the service started, words came to the family members that the pastor, who was to officiate, would no longer be coming as his wife was delivered of a baby that morning which made him to be shuttling between home and hospital.
“The enlarged family members hurriedly went for another pastor who actually came to the venue, but having perhaps assessed the spiritual implication with its looming disaster, he declined to officiate and took a walk away”, a family source hinted. But determined to have a pastor to officiate at the funeral, the family members went for a third one, Pastor Okipet Odum of the Sanctuary of Hope Church, Asaga, Ohafia who also happened to be a native of the area. Pastor Odum, who had a church programme that was supposed to run through that weekend, agreed to officiate at a fee and was paid upfront.
Before his calling, Pastor Odum was said to be an employee of a defunct Community bank in the area and until his death, in addition to being a pastor, owned a shop in front of Ebem Motor Park where he sold GSM phone accessories.
Ominous signs
Ominous signs of what was to come began shortly after Pastor Odum began the open air funeral service. Soon after those at the ceremony took their seats under the bright and sunny weather, rain began to fall amid lightening and heavy thunder storms. This forced the casket bearing Pa Okoko’s remains to be taken back to the Obu. Immediately that was done, the rain was said to have stopped instantly. To the chagrin of those around, as soon as the casket was brought out the second time for the continuation of the service, the rain started again this time in greater proportion. At that point, Pastor Odum, who went ahead with the conduct of the funeral service, suddenly collapsed. There was commotion as family members and others who were at the venue ran for their dear lives. Members of the Ekpe society who like their late member had opposed the church service and had all the while stayed afar to watch proceedings, hurriedly came and attempted to carry the casket to their member’s final resting place.
While trying to do that, another equally strange thing happened. As the members attempted to lift the combination of wood and glass casket from the wooden table it was placed on, the bottom pulled off and the corpse dropped on the long table, sending more fears into people.
While the Ekpe society members succeeded in carrying their late member to his final resting place for burial, the pastor was rushed to a nearby hospital. Saturday Sun was told at Asaga, Ohafia that the first hospital Pastor Odum was taken to, refused to admit him on the excuse that his case was spiritual which also required spiritual solution. The same scenario was said to have played out at the second hospital which 13 church where prayer warfare was said to have been waged between that Saturday the incident hapmade him to be taken to his pened and the following Monday when he eventually died.
When Saturday Sun visited Asaga, Ohafia for a first hand information on the incident, the first port of call was the palace of Ezie Ogo Asaga (the traditional Prime Minister), Ezie Ogo Michael Mmecha Ndukwe. On arrival, he was not around, but after some long wait, he came in and expressed delight over the visit. He narrated the story but added that Pastor Odum did not die as a result of any supernatural force.
According to Ezie Ogo Ndukwe: “Most of those who know the late pastor too well will attest to the fact that prior to his death, he was sick. We know him to be suffering from hypertension for some time and nothing would have killed him other than that. I want to tell you that his death was natural, he could have died any other day under the same circumstance.”
The monarch, who said he was a Christian as well as a traditionalist like most of his subjects, stated that traditional groups in the area are not majorly secret societies and debunked the rumour that the pastor may have died as a result of some supernatural powers.
When Saturday Sun visited the family of the late Pa Okoko at Eziukwu Asaga Ohafia, they re-echoed what their Prime Minister said. According to the man’s eldest son, Kalu Oji Okoko, “our father was never a bad man when he was alive, he never killed an ant. His major preoccupation was to heal those afflicted with all manner of incurable diseases; he did not hurt a fly when he was alive. Those who are insinuating that the pastor died as a result of my late father’s diabolical powers are not fair to the man and the family as a whole. Although I was not at the church service and witnessed what happened, from what my siblings told me, the official minister died a natural death.”
However, another of the late Pa Okoko’s son who gave his name as Joseph Iro Oji gave a different version of the pastor’s death. His words: “My father was not responsible for the death of the pastor in anyway. It was those traditionalists who were opposed to the burial of our father in the Christian way that spiritually pinned the man of God to death so that they could have their way. If our father by whatever means could cause the death of the officiating minister, why did he not kill us his children who participated in the church service. The truth remains that the man of God was sick and that was the major source of his death.”
Some residents of the area, who spoke to Saturday Sun on the incident, blamed the pastor for what befell him.
“The pastor died due to disobedience”, one of them started. “Why did he not respect Pa Okoko’s wish? He was from the same area and knew how strong the man was when he was alive and because of pecuniary reason, he decided to conduct the funeral service when other men of God backed out.”

Trees that grew in the river were also cut away for the same purpose. While the river was flowing, it had thousands of visitors from near and far. But sadly, the believed healing river has now dried up. See a video of the river after the cut that is no more.

90  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Female Evangelist Talks About Her Rapists on: 12-04-2014 10:39 AM
A Lagos based female evangelist (names withheld), recently kidnapped and gang raped by her abductors around Ogijo area of Ikorodu Lagos, left everyone speechless when she told two of her abductors arrested by the Lagos State Police command that she had forgiven them for their sins.
The traumatized evangelist who is still trying to come to terms with her nine days despicable experience in the hands of nine kidnappers, even went further to lay her hands on the arrested suspects, advising them to turn new leaves in order to make heaven at the end of their sojourn on earth.
The woman, as gathered, was abducted early this month and kept in the kidnaper’s den; an uncompleted building in Ogijo, Ikorodu, alongside other kidnapped victims, among whom was a Briton.  It was gathered that her abductors tore her clothes into shreds and left her in her Nood throughout her nine days stay, where they had her in turns and at any given time.
While the dehumanizing act was on, one of the kidnappers reportedly put a call through to the evangelist’s husband, demanding for N20 million ransom.  But her husband reportedly dropped the sum of N2 million in an undisclosed location the fourth day but did not have his wife released to him as expected.
Escape at last
On the ninth day, Crime Guard was informed that eight members of the kidnap gang drove out in two vehicles to collect a ransom of N25 million, for the release of the Briton , at Caterpillar bus-stop, Ojota, leaving one of them,(Emeka) behind, to guard their victims.  Moments later, the armed kidnapper was said to had gone to the exhausted evangelist to ease his segxwal urge.  But he got more than what he bargained for as the exhausted woman, in what could be described as a miracle, flung him away, and he hit his head on the brick wall.
According to the woman evangelist who initially bluntly refused to speak to anyone , other than the arrested kidnappers and Police, “ I do not know where the strength came from. But as he was about penetrating… I pushed him and he hit his head on the wall and passed out. Without caring whether I was naked or not, or whether I would be shot in the process, I rushed out of the uncompleted building shouting for help. To my surprise, I discovered that the building was even located among residential buildings.”
It was learnt that one of the curious sympathizers who gathered round her, gave her a wrapper to cover her nakedness.
Back inside the uncompleted building, the kidnapper,on regaining consciousness, reportedly scaled the fence and fled, abandoning his AK 47 riffle, apparently afraid that his escapee could have blown the lid. An irate mob stormed the building later, where the Briton was rescued and the duo taken to the Area N Command,Ijede.
Meanwhile, the rest members of the gang who had earlier gone to collect the ransom for the release of the Briton at Ojota, met their waterloo at the designated point of receipt.
Unknown to them, operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, who got wind of their escapades, intercepted them, resulting in a gun duel which forced the kidnappers to abandon their loot and escaped.
One of them identified as Emeka was, however, arrested and he took the operatives to their hideout from where their victims were discovered to have been taken to Area N Command, Ijede. Police sources told Crime Guard that Emeka’s confessional statement led to the arrest of another suspected member of the gang known as Ikechukwu Ibe.
In his confessional statement, Emeka exonerated him self from the gang rape, saying: “ I could not do it because she kept shouting the name Jesus! Besides, when I discovered she was married, I refused to take part. I even told my colleagues to let her be, since her husband had already paid N2 Million. It was Sam, Innocent, Ikechukwu,Ugo and the rest that raped her . She was kept permanently naked to allow them easy access.
Sam is our leader while Ikechukwu is his deputy. Ugo is the messenger and ‘pointer’. What he does is to identify our victim after which we would intercept the vehicle. My job is to alight from our operational vehicle, get the victim inside before zooming off. At times, we kidnap our victims through information from their drivers,” he said.
One AK 47 and one pump action rifle were reportedly recovered by the policemen at the kidnappers den.

91  Forum / The Buzz Central / Pastor Caught For Having Séx With Two Sisters In Lagos on: 12-04-2014 10:33 AM

A 49-year-old pastor, Friday Arthur, has been charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for the alleged defiling of two under-aged sisters aged 10 and 11 in Lagos.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Victor Eruada, told the court that Arthur committed the offence between March 28 and April 6 at the Ikota Housing Estate area of Lekki, Lagos.

Sgt. Eruada said the pastor had, at various times, lured the girls into his room and defiled them...

He said that the offence violated Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2011. Section 137 prescribes life imprisonment for anyone convicted of the offence of defiling a child.

Arthur, who resides at No. 856, Ikota Housing Estate, Lekki, Lagos, is facing a charge of defilement.

The two sisters and their female guardian were in court.

Surprisingly, when the charges were read to him, Pastor Arthur pleaded not guilty. The Magistrate, Mrs Linda Balogun, granted the pastor N500,000 bail with two sureties and adjourned the case till May 27.

92  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Boko Haram Kills Several Studens Going To Write JAMB on: 12-04-2014 10:29 AM

What is wrong with Boko Haram and their sponsors: why are they making human life worthless?

As you read this, scores of students travelling to write JAMB exam in Borno State have been reportedly killed by the dreaded Boko Haram sect. They were among several persons that lost their lives in multiple attacks that were unleashed by the sect in four communities.
A senator from the area said: "What happened in Borno was beyond understanding. It is a must for me to speak since the people lives are involved and they are my people. All these are happening in my constituency and it will be wrong to keep quiet. I feel so much pained and would not have spoken but definitely my conscience will not let me do that.”

The Senator who is representing Borno Central in the Senate, Zannah Ahmed, on Friday accused the military of complicity in the latest attack where he said that 210 people were killed in attacks on four towns.

The towns included Dikwa, Kala Balge, Gambulga and Gwoza.

The senator claimed that the attackers were all dressed in military uniforms and spoke English language. This was a departure from the Hausa and Kanuri language spoken by the Boko Haram insurgents.

He even lamented that authorities of the military post in Gamboru, which purportedly received a distressed call from the people of Kala Balge avoided the town, claiming that it was not in its area of command.

But what is really going on? Is this Boko Haram or some powerful people just trying to reduce population?

93  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Pastor Adeboye's First Son Opens Up On Séx Before Marriage on: 12-04-2014 10:27 AM

Leke Adeboye, son of Pastor E.A. Adeboye, general overseer of Redeemed Church, and his wife Titilope, has finally opened up on their marriage and the "difficult" issue of abstaining from séx until wedding night. Below is the interesting chat that tell it all...

Thank you so much for agreeing to do this! It’s a delight to be able to hear your story and more importantly, share to bless people. Could we please start off with a brief introduction?
Leke: Introduction of his wife Titilope Adeboye... How do I introduce this fine hot lady?... Forget that she’s my wife, for any random girl – that is still amazing! Lol

What else, she runs me! She’s my Manager, I call her my CEO.. She’s my Account Manager, she runs my entity as a personality and then she runs a number of businesses – Oasis Suya Eatery and Sharwama and she’s also the owner of Mimi’s Confectionery.

My wife is multi-skilled and multi-talented and takes every advantage to improve herself. Whatever she sets her mind on, she would do it! And she CAN do it! I’m proud of that and I basically support, support support!. She studied Mass Communication in the University and got a First Class from behind a 2:1 (laughter).

I take responsibility for that, that was actually my fault! She had actually made up her mind not to go into any relationship with anyone until she finished University. But me, I saw a good thing and jumped in mehn!...

So I guess I caused a bit of a distraction (I’m sorry baby!). She followed it up with a Masters in International Business at Loughborough University. She’s a mother of one (well actually 2, our baby and I, lol)..She’s amazing and has done a fantastic job of it!

And yeah, she’s hot as in Hott!

Titi: My name is Titilope Adeboye. I am a child of the most High God. A wife and mum. I would describe myself as a very simple person really. I love to read, bake, travel and have fun with my family. Whether it be watching movies with my husband or singing *Twinkle Twinkle little star* with my daughter haha. I love doing it all. I am the CEO of Mimi’s Confectionery and I also manage my husband’s eateries.

How would I describe my husband?!
Oluwagbemileke temi nikan is just a sweetheart, an incurable romantic haha.. Ma Papi. He is so fun and charming and never believes anything is impossible. He is my adviser, motivator and so much more. I just love this man and thank God for him everyday.

How does one respond to that? Lol.. Ok, going straight to next question, how did you meet?
(From this point, Titi answers as hubby had to attend to something urgently)
Titi: Well, it was in my third year in Uni. His mum always made sure I had a meal from their home on Sundays, and whenever she was around, she would ask about school and all – she is sweet like that. I wasn’t the only one she did that to though.. My parents were not in Nigeria at that time and Mummy (as I refer to her) was just trying to make sure I was Ok.

So this particular Sunday, I went to dinner in his house, I was in a hurry because I had a test the next day. I came in through the gate and noticed that he was standing there talking to a couple of people and everyone was laughing, I just greeted everyone. That was the first time I saw him, I didn’t know him then at all.

When I was leaving the house, I heard someone running after me and I saw that it was him. He stopped me and said “Hi, I was just told you are Pastor Odesola’s daughter. I didn’t know Pastor Odesola had a grown-up daughter. He used to be my mentor”.. and he just kept on talking about my dad! Then he said ”I am really pleased to meet you. Can I have your number so I can check up on you” – I gave him my number and left. That was how we met really. He was just like a big brother. From Hi to ‘I Do’…

Titi: Honestly, I did not think that we would end up married or anything! I just found him so funny, no dull moment at all – he just lights up the room. But I didn’t see him like that.. {Ayo you know what I mean now (lol)}.

He was like my brother I loved him that way. Infact when he asked me to marry him, I didn’t see that coming. I was just shocked and I said no.

First, I had plans – I wanted to do this and that before I even considered anyone, then ‘Leke’?, really?! Pastor Adeboye’s son! All eyes on me; no, no!. I love my simple life, thank you very much. I didn’t even want to pray about it, just in case God said ‘Yes’.. Lol.. Can you imagine that? HahahaPoor man, eni eleni. He asked me to at least pray about it. I later decided to pray about it, fasted.. Sought counsel from my mum and dad.

It took a bit of work to change my mindset. Then one day, he said to me. “Your life doesn’t end when you become my wife, it just continues with me in it. You can still do everything you want, and as long as we are doing the right things, acceptable to God, I don’t care what anyone thinks or says”.

It was as if I had never heard that before. I saw a man that loved and cared and would stand up for his wife anyday. I thought it was absolutely sweet.

Honestly, today I can definitely say – Leke is my perfect man – He gets me, knows me big time!

Titi: We thought to ourselves, "What’s the rush for anyway?” We used to remind each other that we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. Also, we were determined as well. We had gone on many dates but in places where other people were, in order to minimise temptations.Where you tempted?

Titi: Yes of course! This man that I really loved, with his sweet charming self, eyes that are just beautiful. Sometimes I just thank God we were not alone hehehe (that’s all I’m saying!) hahaha.Honestly, practical measures – Don’t be alone for too long, speak on the phone, text, go on dates in public places, watch that movie in the cinema instead of his or your bedroom (you know what I mean.. lol). Don’t tempt the devil to tempt you.

Amen to that! So, what would you say to young people who say waiting before marriage is ‘old-school’ or unachievable in this day and age?
Well I would say that it’s a wrong perspective. We sometimes let emotions run wild. Ok, let me paint a picture – If a cute mad person, male or female, as in really crazy fellow with knives and all says – “Darling I love you, I want to have séx with you”, will you run or stay? I bet you will be disgusted, embarrassed and run too. That’s how we should feel about sin. We need to be different as children of God, shine the light, in obedience to God.. What made Joseph in the bible stand out was because he was different – he refused to defile himself with his Master’s wife (You can read about this in Gen 39:1-23). It’s not just even in the area of séxual sin alone, but also in everything else.

Having that spirit of excellence like Daniel and the 3 Hebrew boys. For me, I’m thinking ”If I do this, will Jesus commend my actions, thoughts or words?” (Philippians 4:Cool. Please, don’t be pressured into doing what is wrong.

Sometimes, it’s not an easy price to pay. But I can tell you that the benefits are immeasurable. And for anyone waiting for that perfect partner, Jesus is never too late… Please don’t sell yourself short – It is better to enjoy a lifetime of bliss than just one wedding day and the rest is hell!

Being married has its ups and downs but God has been there for us through it all…. I can testify!

95  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / BREAKING NEWS: Gunfire Reported Around Presidential Villa, SSS HQ on: 30-03-2014 10:31 AM
Reports reaching us indicate there was shooting in the vicinity of Nigeria's Presidential palace and the headquarters of the Department of State Services in the Asokoro District of Abuja.

The expansive headquarters of the State Security Service, popularly known as Yellow House, is adjacent to one of the remote gates of the Presidential villa.
According to security sources and residents of the nearby Aso Drive area, the gunshots were either coming out of the SSS headquarters or the Presidential villa.
One local resident said, "We don't know what's going on here. Heavy gunfire has been coming from the direction of the villa. The entire area has been barricaded. SSS operatives are scampering out of their headquarters as the gunshots get louder.
"Soldiers are now heading in the direction of the SSS headquarters with Armoured Personnel Carriers. Those of us living around here have been asked to stay indoors and not venture out."
The spokesperson of the SSS, Marilyn Ogar said the shooting was about an attempted jailbreak at the Service's headquarters by suspected members of Boko Haram sect.
She said, "What happened was that the suspects handlers went to feed the detainees here but suddenly they attacked him with their handcuffs, disarmed him and started shooting.
"The military was quickly called in before they could do any harm and that is responsible for the shootings you heard. It was an attempted jailbreak but it has been brought under control."
