For the sake of sanity in society, God put a high premium on human life. It is not His wish that any man, under whatever provocation, should take the life of another. To drum it into the ears of His people, God specifically instructed Moses to declare before the congregation, that murder was totally forbidden. Created in the image of God, man has an edge over every other creature and his life is very sacred. In our passage, Moses spelt out to the people that premeditated murders must attract death sentence. Severe punishments were also prescribed for manslaughter. God knows what is in man, how evil his tendencies are. Therefore, leaving him unchecked would increase his wickedness. Moreover, God instructed Moses that kidnappers must also be put to death. “And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death” (verse 16). Although we are under the dispensation of grace where believers can obtain mercy from God for sins committed, it does not suggest that we have obtained the licence to commit sins under the umbrella of grace. As a believer, if you have for any reason committed murder which was concealed, such will attract the wrath of God unless confession is made and forgiveness sought. Some still commit murders under various guises, they commit abortions to conceal their immorality or to run away from shame. To those who have committed murders and are yet concealing them, the blood of their victims is still crying against them, and God’s book in heaven has the record. Have you killed anybody to obtain a better position? Has anybody been killed to pave the way for you in your so-called lucrative business? The Bible says, though hand joins with hand, the sinner must not go unpunished.TEXT: EXODUS 21:12-25
