The Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Anambra State, Rev. Godwin Okpala, has described many religious groups as “cults”.

He said many of them have no positive impact on members and engage in various evil practices.

Rev. Okpala spoke over the weekend at Parktonia Hotels, Awka, during a five-day workshop, tagged: ‘Anambra Re-orientation Conference.

The workshop was organised by Orient Magazine, Newspaper Communications Limited, in conjunction with the state’s chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

The cleric said owning a church has become the most lucrative business in Igbo land.

He said: “However, the number of churches does not have commensurate impact in the lives of the people. Crimes are multiplying by the minute. Kidnapping, gun running, car snatching, armed robbery, human rituals, harlotry, child trafficking and murder have become the order of the day.

“Leaders of these religious groups, in spite of the activities of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), are not at peace with one another.

“They preach one thing and do another. Some religious groups are cults. They commit all kinds of atrocities and engage in dark activities, and members are at risk of losing their lives, if they opt to withdraw.”

Rev. Okpala praised Governor Peter Obi for setting up the State Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS) and prayed that God would continue to direct him.
