If the change of name makes no difference, why then the change at all? Why not leave things the way they are?
A name is primarily given for identification. But when the bearer of a name has rich experiences; a long history and historical culture, symbolic power achieved over a very long period of time, when a section of a society ally to the bearer of a name as a symbol of authority, prestige, pride and honour, identification, communal unity et cetra the name gets institutionalized and becomes a history of its own. Only a fool who does not know the value of such institutions i.e institutionalized names like UNILAG would attempt changing them. This is why a country like ours with a rich historical-cultural-traditional heritage has no phisical evidence to show for it. For us modernization means destroy everything and make them new, rename everything, keep no phisical records of old historical accounts etc. No meaningful museum of any kind with original materials, no botanical gardens, no zoo, and no institutionalized names. A pity!
No long term plan by the governments. Once a groups jumps in, it will disorganize and rearrange everything withing 4 year. Another will come and disorganize and might not even be able to rearrange it again. Who cares as long as their pockets are filled.
