ARMED robbers numbering over 20, on Friday night, at about 9p.m., bombed a police station and a branch of Unity Bank, killing one policeman, while another  female police officer was wounded in Iyara, Ijumu Local Government Council in Kogi State.

Sunday Tribune reliably gathered that the armed robbers, armed with sophisticated weapons and explosives, divided themselves into two groups. While one of the groups invaded Unity Bank and brought it down with explosives, the other attacked the police station where the policeman was killed while the female police officer was also shot on the back while trying to escape.

The operation, according to Sunday Tribune findings, lasted for two hours as the people of the community ran for their lives to avoid being killed as a result of the sporadic shooting by the armed robbers.

The Kogi  State Commissioner of Police, Mallam Muhammed  Katsina, while reacting to the robbery incident, said the robbers invaded the police station and bank  in order to steal arms, ammunition and money, but failed in their attempt. He vowed to pursue and arrest those behind the robbery incident.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State  government has vowed to fish out those behind the recent bombings of the Unity Bank and Iyara Divisional Police Station, which led to the death of a policeman.

The state governor, Captain  Idris Wada, who made the disclosure when he inspected the extent of damage done to the police station and bank at  Iyara yesterday, promised to make the  incident the last in the area.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Mr. Yomi Awoniyi, he said Kogi State was bordered by 10 states, including the FCT, a situation which he noted made it difficult to curtail some criminal activities. He  declared that government would make the state unsafe for criminals and those engaged in terrorist activities.

Captain  Wada commiserated with the police over the death of the policeman who was said to be of the rank of corporal, while assuring that the government would foot the bill of the female officer currently receiving treatment at the Kabba General Hospital.

The governor ordered her transfer to the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, for prompt and adequate treatment.

He further appealed to those causing harm and pain to people going about their legitimate businesses in the state to have a change of mind and desist forthwith, saying that very soon, the long arm of the law would catch up with them.

Capt. Wada assured of continuous logistics and other support to security agencies in the state to enable them to tackle future security challenges that might arise in the state.

In his remarks, the  Olujumu of Ijumu Kingdom, Oba Jerome Sumonu, commended the prompt response by security agencies and called for more presence of security agencies and military personnel to patrol the area as the three divisional police stations and all banks in the area had been under attack in the last one last year.
