If TBJ is receiving visions from Yahweh (who is supposed to be omnipotent and omniscient), then there is no excuse for vagueness or error. If he isn't receiving visions from Yahweh, then he does have wriggle room, but then he's lying about the source.
That of course assumes that he's not just making it up as he goes, which is in fact the case.
