Five persons believed to be members of the same family yesterday died in an auto crash that occurred at Ubulu-Okiti Junction, near Asaba, on Benin-Onitsha Expressway. The victims were said to be travelling from Ekiti State and heading towards Awka in Anambra State when the Toyota Hilux vehicle they were travelling in lost one of its tyres.
An eyewitness said the vehicle skidded-off the road and somersaulted several times, resulting in the death of five of the occupants, while two survived. Among the survivors was an octogenarian believed to be the matriarch of the family. The other survivor, said to be one of the daughters of the deceased couple, was receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, (FMC), Asaba as at the time of this report. But the husband who was said to be driving the vehicle, his pregnant wife, two of their children (male and female) and a steward perished in the unfortunate incident.
The bodies of the dead victims were evacuated by officials of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and deposited at the FMC in Asaba. However, the FRSC officials declined comments when approached by our correspondent and referred the newspaper to the Sector Commander's office in Asaba. But Public Relations Officer of the commission, Mr. Bassey said he was yet to be briefed on the accident and promised to contact Daily Sun as soon as he get details, which he never did as at the time of filing this report.
