Several reasons have been raised as to why some foreign airlines do not allow their crew to pass the night in Nigeria.
But local aviators have observed that the development portends great danger to the nation's economy.
A top official of Lufthansa Airlines disclosed that security reasons made the carrier to always move its crew from Nigeria to Ghana anytime it arrived the country.
Before now, the source said that the crew of the German carrier were always escorted by heavily armed police to their hotel in Lagos where they would pass the night.
For fear that the unexpected could happen someday, he said that the management of the airline decided to arrange for the crew to start passing the night in Ghana.
Consequently, he said, the airline decided to reschedule its operations in such a way that after disembarking its Nigerian passengers in Abuja and Lagos, its flights move to Ghana as final destination where the crew would then pass the night.
Currently, Lufthansa operates daily flights between Frankfurt and Lagos and thrice to Abuja from its hub in Germany.
The spokesperson for Lufthansa in Nigeria, Mr. Kayode Olaniyan, confirmed that the crew had stopped passing the night in Nigeria but declined further comments on why the airline took the decision.
But a travel expert and publisher, Akwaaba Travels Quarterly, Mr. Ikechi Uko, said that the reason was beyond security, adding that other economic factors were involved too.
According to him, the crew of South Africa Airways do not pass the night in Nigeria, and this was for economic reasons.
Spokesman of SAA in Nigeria, Mr. Tope Awe, said that the airline comes into Nigeria with two sets of crew, one for the first and the other for the second leg of the journey back to its home country.
He explained that this was for economic reasons, as it paid the airlines more than paying for hotels and other related expenses should they lodge them in Nigeria.
Uko said that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian Tourism Development Board need to prevail on the airlines to reverse this decision, adding that a great havoc was being done to the Nigerian economy.
He said that the nation was losing money because the benefits attached to airlines coming into a country, including a boost to the nation's hospitality industry and economy, were being denied.
He said that foreign airlines were making a lot of money in Nigeria and that they should not hesitate to give back to the country.
The Media Assistant to the Director-General, NCAA, Mr. Sam Adurogboye, said that the agency could only intervene if the crew were not observing rest, which could impact on safety.
Its very right for the foreign airline crew not to pass the night in nigeria.(1)There is no security n nigerian airports especially lagos. How can they be escorted to thier various hotels in lagos wit a heavy convoy of MOPOL?so the crews said that it mean that they are not safe in nigeria without the escort.Thats why they have decided to to pass the night in lagos any more.I was ashamed some times ago when i arived in lagos with 6 of my italian friends,it was inside the flight the other white men were telling them to be very careful in nigeria and my guest started panicking and i told them that with me they are safe. They saw all sort of things in lagos.even our government makes the foreign people to get scared alot when they get to nigeria. You see many road side mechanics in europe called (ENGINEERS)in nigeria been escorted by MOPOL.The fault goes to our government. We hve a bastard government in nigeria.Lets pray good times will come again to nigeria. What our government believes in is crude oil, other countries make money from tourism and many others. When our senators come to europe,do they have escort? No,in europe hee and the USA,everybody is free to move.n the city where i live in italy,i live with the mayor of my city in the same street and he goes to officesometimes in bicycle or if sunny,he walks to the office.can that happen in nigeria? The foreign airlines does it better for thier crew not to pas the night in nigeria bcuz no security in naija.

Even Alitalia has followed suit! They now made Ghana their final destination.
PPl working for airlines in nigerian airports most times pose as immigration or customs just to find a way of getting money out of you. Last friday I had a quarrel with them over this. Shameless things.
Speach is silver, silence is Gold!

I would have a problem with Air France, I have questioned them many times as to why? My flight from Dublin to Lagos is half the price of the flight for my B/F Lagos to Dublin, They say it is Bcaz of the difference between the Euro & Dollar, But when I calculate it, always there is a big difference, This they say is the taxes which have to be paid in Nigeria, Which is almost the same cost as the ticket. They do not stay overnight simply because they land at 4.00 and the same plane goes out at 11.00 that night. Don't mind the excuses they give, It is all down to the exchange rate, As the prices where the same before the dollar weakened, So their mark up is not as much.. Its when airlines make comments like this that it effects tourism to Nigeria.

I know that Nigeria will emerge as a leading country in Africa. I have seen & experienced many differences between Nigeria & Europe, My Question has always been to the big companies which operate in both, Why do they think they can break laws in Nigeria which they could not do in Europe? These companies should be named & shamed in Europe so the people know how they operate in Africa.
