The Assembly members want the Nigerian President to grant Boko Haram amnesty.

National Assembly members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from the North East of Nigeria have appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to rescind his decision not to grant amnesty to members of the Boko Haram sect. They asked him to rescind the decision in order to protect the lives and property of people in the region.

The Deputy Senate Leader, Abdul Ningi, made the appeal when he spoke on behalf of the NASS members at the North East Zonal meeting with the National Chairman of the PDP in Bauchi.

“We want the National Chairman of PDP who is from our zone to call on President Goodluck Jonathan to rescind his earlier decision made in Borno and Yobe states not to grant amnesty to insurgents or to protect our lives and properties because our people are being killed every day, our economy is crippled. We want the president to make a u-turn, grant them amnesty, protect our lives and address the security challenges in the region,” he said.

He said the North East is the most marginalized and backward region in the country and appealed to the government to be fair and just to the people of the region.

In his remark, the Bauchi State Governor, Isa Yuguda, assured the people of the zone that the prevailing insecurity would soon be over; and also appealed to the PDP Chairman to use his experience and wisdom to convince the Federal Government to tackle the problems of poverty and unemployment by reviving the agricultural sector.

“The North East region is the most impoverished region in the country and we want the Federal Government to help the region to tackle the problem. On our part, all of us, the Governors of the region would continue to support the National Chairman of the party and the Federal Government,” Mr. Yuguda said.

The Governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo, pleaded with the National Chairman to use his office to bring peace to the region.
