She not only raised the bar for aspirant poets across the country but also the coveted R250,000 price. The grade six learner at Sol Plaatjie Primary School who said that her ambition is to “Change the world” got so much support and votes from South Africans to win the prize.
Another remarkable thing about her story is that she was raised by her single mother who taught her to believe in herself and encouraged her to reach for the sky.
Her final performance received a standing ovation from the entire audience and judges in the semi-finals and finals. One of the judges, Shado Twala cried openly in admiration of the young poet’s talent.
