It’s the kind of love story movies are made of. Harold “Doc” and Ruth Knapke were married a week short of 66 years and died on the same day, August 11, just hours apart. The Knapkes’ daughters said they believed it was Doc’s ”final act of love” that he willed himself to stay alive, despite being gravely ill, so they could pass together.
Doc died in the Ohio couple’s shared room, and Ruth followed 11 hours later. “We believe he wanted to accompany her out of this life and into the next one, and he did,” daughter Margaret Knapke said. “It is really just a love story,” said daughter Carol Romie. The couple had known each other since childhood and were pen pals while Doc served in World War II.
