Again, Reps throw out FOI Bill
Attempts to get the Freedom of Informa tion (FOI) Bill into law suffered another setback as the House of Representatives refused a motion moved to have the bill considered clause by clause.
The motion, moved by the sponsor of the bill, Honourable Abike Dabiri, and seconded on the order of the Deputy Speaker, Honourable Usman Bayero Nafada, who presided over Tuesday’s sitting, was refused endorsement by the members of the House in a voice vote.
The controversial bill, which would have given Nigerians access to information, had suffered several setbacks in the recent past.
Most times, it had been listed on the Order Paper but was always skipped once it got to debate and was also rejected few days ago when a motion to consider it clause by clause was moved.
Amid row and bad mood as the House decided whether to go ahead with the debate on the bill, the Speaker put the question twice and twice, the nay voice was overwhelming.
The Deputy Speaker found it difficult to rule on the matter on the two occasions.
