RELIGIOUSITY AND MORAL DECADENCE IN NIGERIA. Basil OdenoreThe atheist philosopher of the 19th century, Friedrich Nietzsche, once said: “if Christians want me to believe in their redeemer, they need to look more redeemed.”Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most respected leaders of modern history. A Hindu, Ghandi nevertheless admired Jesus and often quoted from the Sermon on the Mount. Once somebody asked him, "Mr. Ghandi, though you quote the words of Christ often, why is that you appear to so adamantly reject becoming his follower?"Ghandi replied, "Oh, I don't reject your Christ. I love your Christ. It's just that so many of you Christians are so unlike your Christ."Sometime ago, a friend of mine came to my house with a young lady, who is a member of one of the evangelical Churches. She had her bible on her, and was determined to show me that the Catholic Church was a long way from where Christ asked church to be. As bedazzled as she was after getting a few Biblical punches on the fact that the Catholic Church and her teachings remain undiluted for 2000 years, I sent the message home by asking her what spiritual progress she thinks her Church and many others like hers would have made since the so called reformation. Her answers showed that she had never evaluated the spiritual status of Christians or Christianity since she became an evangelical, but our conclusion was that the world has gone off worse that it was since the spread of the gospel by evangelicals and their establishment of uncountable churches.Why have we gone off on the wrong footing in Nigeria? What is creating this so called decadence in the Nigerian society? Why the rot in religion? And who are the perpetuators of this religious brouhaha in our system? What did the Church teach that made life more godly at a time? How Is it different from what they are teaching now?The so called reformation with its attendant problems, rising from scripture, and, faith alone syndrome cannot be overlooked in this matter, because it is the only recordable point from whence the liberality, relativism, and subjectivism in theology got its root. All these big grammar amounts to one thing; twisting the word of God to sooth certain purposes; selfish and greedy gains you might say.The truth is that the message of Miracles and prosperity has overturned  the message of true repentance and righteous living. Christianity has been made to assume a social status, such that the reason people become Christians is not to practice but to assume the status.While we are taught how to remember the heroes of faith to emulate them, by living pious lives, some persons are thinking of how to establish big Churches, gain enormous followership, and exploit them; to buy big cars, build houses, and live flamboyant lives.Everywhere you go to you hear ministers quoting passages of Scriptures with reckless abandon, using Greek and Hebrew exposition to interpret it as if they were there when the Bible was written in the first place. This same kind of messages run in every church, be it mushroom or mega. Ministers are claiming that they heard from God, who has asked them to go and establish a church of their own. I would be completely dazed if these Church founders would also claim that the only way to spread the good news would be for them to establish their own Churches, knowing that what Christ said in Acts Chapter 1 was that they move from Jerusalem, and to other parts of the world. You don’t have to look too closely to notice that the last kiosk in the neighbourhood had been converted to a church. The last count I have of the number of Christian denominations was in 2006 (American count) and it was said that there were 36,000; and, Nigeria has a branch of about 80 percent of that.In the 2006 BBC rating of the Christian faith, Nigeria showed that it was the most prayerful country of the World; a country that has the fastest growing Christian race.If all these are true about the country, then we must be very good people, unless the covers of our newspapers are getting the wrong ideas about the quantum amount of kidnapping, high rate of robbery, high rate of money swindling, high rate of police brutality and immorality, high rate of cheating, high rate of corruption among government officials, money-for-hand-back-na-ground contract awarders, both in the civil sphere and in the oil industries; did I say that Nigeria is among the top ten most corrupt nations of the world?We also have lecturers who would either sleep with female student to pass them, or demand cash from both the male and female students; these are equally unbelievable; even ministers of God run away with young women, some of them legally married, in segxwal adventures. All these things are happening, every day, before our very own eyes, and in the midst of uncountable Churches and ministries. What is the purpose for the establishment of new churches if the innumerable ones are not making any meaningful impact? Everywhere you turn a man of God is preaching on air; he is telling you about those who are troubling you, and that they have been empowered by God to come and fight battles on your behalf. For people whose means of livelihood have dwindled alarmingly, and have been told that what is responsible for these calamities is something that God has sent them to come and take away from their lives, any so called man of God can swindle.Some of the turns I have made in life has brought me before these calibre of people who can never give you a clean bill of health, but would always tell you that every fly, and every bird, and every sign that you have seen in life is as a result of the fact that witches, devils, and demons are after you.I know two people in Warri, today, who use to operate white garment Churches, but have converted their Churches to the so styled Pentecostal Churches; and I can tell you that people are trooping to these churches to gain respite from the devils that they claim troubles them.Talking about citing Churches, is there a passage of Scriptures that allows anybody to establish his own Church? it is true that every baptized Christian has been sent forth to preach the message of the gospel, but why do we get it so wrong and claim that the reason we set up Churches is because God said where two or three are gathered in my name, there, I am, in the midst of them? Or that the Holy Spirit called them to start ministry? where two or three are gathered is where two or three are gathered, it’s not a church, you can call that fellowship if you like. Go onto the world and preach does not mean, go and set up a church for me, it means go and live out the gospel message with exemplary conducts, and if absolutely necessary, speak a few words. To be candid, people are tired of hearing sets of rules that are not manifest in the life of the minister, they want action. A few words and mostly action is what most of us have been called to make, because the bible says we should not all teach, for the one who teaches would be judged with stricter measure:James 3:1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.James 3:2 For we all stumble in many ways, and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.As the crime against humanity by humans is on the upsurge many people are becoming more vulnerable to these religious crooks who call themselves ministers and disciples of the gospel. Because these lay people are so desperate, as a result of the holes that corrupt officials have created by their nuclear embezzlement, it is difficult to pull them out of this seeming hypnotic abracadabra, why? Because signs and wonders seem to be accompanying what they claim is the true work of God. There is speaking in tongues, they claim people are leaving wheelchairs, people are becoming fruitful they say, people are been transformed from cold Christians to vibrant Christians. How do you explain these things away just like that to people who think orthodoxy is boring? People who say you have come again with don’t kill, don’t steal, don’t fornicate, and don’t commit adultery? Without any assurance that what plagues them would disappear at an instance. Why should they keep getting their consciences shattered by the dos and don’ts of the Catholic teaching? Is it not better to be where you can sin conveniently with nobody to tell you how bad it is?This is not the first time this is happening. It happened back in the time of Jeremiah. Hear the prophet speak: Jeremiah 23:9-11, 14-17, 21-25 Concerning the prophets: My heart is broken within me; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine, because of the Lord and because of his holy words. For the land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land mourns and the pastures of the wilderness are dried up. Their course is evil, and their might is not right. "Both prophet and priest are ungodly; even in my house I have found their evil, declares the Lord.....But in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies; they strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his evil; all of them have become like Sodom to me, and its inhabitants like Gomorrah."...." Thus says the Lord of hosts: "Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, 'It shall be well with you'; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, 'No disaster shall come upon you.'" "I did not send the prophets, yet they ran; I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in my council, then they would have proclaimed my words to my people, and they would have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their deeds.Jeremiah 23:25 I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, 'I have dreamed, I have dreamed!'The prophet Isaiah had the following to say:Isaiah 30:10 who say to the seers, "Do not see," and to the prophets, "Do not prophesy to us what is right; speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions,Isaiah 30:15 For thus said the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, "In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength." But you were unwilling,Now let us turn to the New Testament, a place where today Christians think they can take solace in evil doing.In Matthew 7:21-. In this passage Jesus Christ actually prophesied that people would perform miracles in His name, but they would be people that He would not approve of. This is actually to put to rest the idea that miracle working is not a yardstick for measuring that someone is approved by God as so many ministers seem to be making people believe. Hear the words of Jesus Christ Himself:Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.Matthew 7:22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?'Matthew 7:23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'Matthew 7:24 "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.As for hard times and swindling in the name of God, saint Paul says:2 Timothy 3:1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.2 Timothy 3:2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,2 Timothy 3:3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good,2 Timothy 3:4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,2 Timothy 3:5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.2 Timothy 3:6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions,Further down, in Matthew 15:8-9  "'This people honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'"2 Corinthians 4:1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.2 Corinthians 4:2 But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God.2 Corinthians 4:3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing.2 Corinthians 4:4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.2 Corinthians 4:5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.2 Thessalonians 2:8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.2 Thessalonians 2:9 The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,2 Thessalonians 2:10-12: And with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.God did not ask anybody to go and establish a Church; it’s not in the Bible, but God gives gift to people freely, and it is this gift, of either speaking in tongues or casting out demons that gives people the impetus to believe that they have been called to establish a Church.God’s gift is meant for the common good of everyone, separation is strongly condemned1 Corinthians 12:4-7 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;1 Corinthians 12:7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.So don’t run away thinking that the one gift that has been given to you is meant to go and start your own Church.Ephesians 4:2-7: with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit--just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call--one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift.Finally, the Catholic Church, in the Spirit of Ecumenism, is calling other Christians to same spirit, so that the words of Christ in the Gospel of John can be fulfilled.The same Church, saddled with the responsibility of evangelizing the world in the first place is working to mend a broken Christian bondJohn 10:16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold.
