Government spokesman Lambert Mende was quoted by Reuters saying in televised briefing “There are around 100 dead,”, adding that pastor Paul Joseph Mukungubila, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 2006, was being pursued by security forces.
Clashes between Mukungubila’s supporters and security forces also took place on Monday in the eastern mining town of Lumbumbashi at a church run by Mukungubila, witnesses told Reuters.
The pastor has railed against President Joseph Kabila’s decision to make peace with Tutsi rebels in eastern Congo, saying the president was bowing to pressure from Rwanda.
“There were so few of them and they were so poorly armed, so we don’t think the assailants had any other objective than to cause panic and terror on the eve of the new year festivities which have so much importance in our culture,” Mende said.
