Senegal has become the fifth West African country to be affected by the deadly Ebola Virus Disease. The country's health minister, Awa Marie Coll Seck told reporters today that an infected Guinea national 'brought' the virus to Senegal.

The carrier, a student visited an hospital in Dakar for treatment and didn't disclose that he had close contact with victims in his country. Infact, he disappeared from his country three weeks ago while under surveillance. He's been immediately placed in quarantine in Senegal.

authorities in Senegal confirmed their first Ebola case on Friday as the worst outbreak on record continued to spread in West Africa.

The patient is a university student from neighboring Guinea, where the outbreak was first detected in March, Health Minister Awa Marie Coll Seck told reporters in the Senegalese capital, Dakar. [link in French]

Guinea informed the country on Wednesday that a young man who had been under surveillance there disappeared three weeks ago and may have traveled to Senegal, she said.

The student was located at a hospital in Dakar, where he had presented himself the previous day without disclosing that he had had close contacts with Ebola victims in his home country.

Tests confirmed the man was infected with the Ebola virus and he remains under quarantine, the minister said. She appealed for calm and strict adherence to hygiene measures, including hand washing with soap and water.

More than 3,000 suspected and confirmed Ebola cases have been reported in West Africa, and more than 1,500 people have died of the virus, according to figures released by the World Health Organization. A separate outbreak has killed at least 13 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo in central Africa.

Most of the Ebola deaths have been in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, but at least six people have died in Nigeria.

The continued widespread of Ebola shows how the healthcare system in West Africa as a whole remains UNDER DEVELOPED even in the 21st century. The conditions of the hospitals (as shown in photos), the lack of HYGIENE, the poor dress code of medics (nurses and doctors etc) to stop the spread, the lack of basic equipment
just seems silly!

It will take more than HAND WASHING to stop the onslaught of this disease. In Liberia you hear the military are shooting at Ebola sufferers. We hear rumours of RRLATIVES abandoning dead family members because they died of Ebola. Where is the love  of the AFRICAN
extended family - something Europeans loved about our culture? We would rather have ANIMALS eat our dead thsn touch them.

Of course it has spread to Senegal. And it will continue to spread as long as people CONTINUE TO "ESCAPE and DISAPPEAR!" We ALL know that in such cases money has changed hands (BRIBE) because thats how we "survive."

We really need to get a grip and STOP passing ourselves of as a people who cannot look after ourselves - especially after all the BILLIONS in FORIEGN currency that has been given to us over the  last 50 years as a continent to combat our failing health system!!!!! Malaria continues to KILL hundreds of babies and children a day in different West African countries with no solution in sight.

What is wrong with us?Huh?
