Many feared dead and many more injured as inmates of Kirikiri Maximum Prisons, Apapa, Lagos attempted to escape earlier today.. Eye witnesses say Navy and Police personnel are now keeping watch around the facility, restricting movement of people in and outside the barracks where Kirikiri Maximum Prison is located. They have also cordoned off all the entry and exit routes leading to the prison.
Civilians and vehicles are also being except those who have proof that they are resident in the barracks. Also, passers-by have also been warmed to use alternative routes. The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Prison Service, Mr. Ope Fatinikun confirmed the unrest.
“Yes, there a slight misunderstanding. However, what happened was a riot not a jail break.” the spokesman said.
“The incident occurred at the medium security prison but it has been contained.
“I can assure you that no cause for alarm as everything has been brought under control.”
On what led to protest by the inmates, Mr. Fatinikun said, “I will release a statement tomorrow, you will get the details then.”
