President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Miss Usoro Offiong Akpabio as the Managing Director of the South South Development Commission (SSDC), a newly established body tasked with accelerating development in the region
Ms Akpabio, a 42-year-old political strategist from Akwa Ibom State, is known for her experience in grassroots development and policy planning. Her appointment signals a renewed focus on regional growth, infrastructure, and economic empowerment in the South South zone.
She will work alongside former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche, who has been named Chairman of the Commission. The SSDC is composed of 18 members and will be headquartered in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.
The appointments have been sent to the Senate for confirmation. Once ratified, the Commission will begin implementing key development projects aimed at bridging infrastructure gaps and improving livelihoods in the region.
President Tinubu’s approval of the SSDC leadership is part of his broader ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, which prioritizes inclusive governance and sustainable regional development across Nigeria.
