Sen. Lawal Shuaibu is the deputy chairman (North) of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In this interview with RUTH CHOJI, the APC chieftain discusses issues related to the 2015 Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to win the presidential election.
The APC’s candidate, Gen Buhari seems to be pretty comfortable ahead of the presidential poll. Are you optimistic of victory this time, taking into cognisance his past experiences? Gen Buhari’s chances are extremely high. He has a better chance now than ever before. The APC is a conglomeration of many opposition parties unlike when he used to run under one of the legacy parties. I can assure you that the strength of the party, the goodwill of the party and the situation of the country under the PDP government adds to the popularity of General Buhari and his clinching the seat.
A game changer was in the selection of General Buhari’s running mate, Prof Yomi Osinbajo,. What was the criteria used? And why the ditching of the much touted Muslim/Muslim ticket? Gen Buhari himself wanted it to be very democratic, he didn’t want it to be seen as if he single handedly made the decision. He decided to hand over the task to the party to help him make the decision and at the leadership meeting, they decided to set up a seven- man committee headed by Prince Tony Momoh and asked them to take one hour and bring three names from which the general could pick. The committee could not agree for whatever reason and so at the end of the day, the party decided to allow him to do his consultation and come up with the running mate of his choice and he brought Prof Yomi Osinbajo.
Guess what is amusing them?
Meanwhile Buhari’s daughter, Zahra is pictured with the vice presidential candidate Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. She ran into Nigeria's Prof and Osinbajo didn't hold back himself knowing where his loyalty lies, he however chatted with her briefly during the APC courtesy visit to Obasanjo’s Hilltop Mansion In Abeokuta.
Common sense is indeed not common.
