The final list of governorship candidates of the 25 political parties cleared at the end of the period for substitution of candidates to contest the upcoming gubernatorial election in Anambra State was released yesterday with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) having no candidate. National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Maurice Iwu released the list in Awka.

Outgoing Resident Electoral Commissioner in charge of Anambra State Chief Rowland Uwa, who signed the list dated December 8, 2009, said the omission of the names of the governorship and deputy governorship candidates of the PDP "is subject to court litigation."

According to the list, the only woman governorship candidate, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, is running on the platform of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) with Mike Agbadinuno as her running mate.

Also in the race is the 2007 gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Olusegun Obasanjo's former Senior Special Assistant on Domestic Matters, Dr Andy Uba, who replaced Chief Mike Areh as the Labour Party candidate with Edwin Ndife as his running mate.

Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu again dumped the PDP and is running on Hope Democratic Party's (HPD)ticket after the flag bearer, Barrister Mike Okoye, stepped down to run as his running mate.

Action Congress (AC) fielded former state governor Dr Chris Ngige as its candidate with Phil Agbasi as his running mate, while Godfrey Ndubuisi Chijioke and Florence Chinyelu Obiako are the gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial candidates of the National Democratic Party (NDP).

Other candidates and their running mates include New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP): Patrick Ogochukwu Egolum and Dozie Julius Chukwuma; United Nigeria Peoples Party [UNPP]: Dr. Chris Nwachukwu Okoli and Nosike Julius Chukwuma.

Former member of the State House of Assembly, George Ike Okoye remains the gubernatorial candidate of the NMPP while Paul Paker Onyeizugbo is his running mate. Nigeria Advance Party [NAP]: Njdeka Nyadike and Arthur Obi Okolonji.

Community Party of Nigeria (CPN): Arc Geoff Onyejegbu and Okeke Nnodu Cyril; Congress for Democratic Change (CDC): Kenneth Chukwuemeka and John Nwosu; United Democratic Party (UDP): Godson Okoye and Okechukwu Emmanuel Chinelo; Africa Renaisance Party [ARP]: Emmanuel Nwalunor and Ezeife Chuks Uche; All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP): Michael Ejezie and Okeke George Okwudili; African Democratic Congress (ADC): Ralphs Okey Nwosu and Prince Emmanuel Odunze.

Meanwhile, the substituted candidate of the ALP, Clement Imoyeto Ikeotuonye is believed to have gone to the Federal High Court, Abuja to challenge his replacement with Arc. Nwafor without his knowledge or informing him.

Releasing the list at the Stakeholders Forum for Anambra State Gubernatorial Election 2010 held at the Tourists Garden Hotels, Awka, Iwu said the Commission is prepared to make sure that an authentic governor who is the son or daughter of the soil emerges as the winner.

He said the election would be done on the basis of one man one vote, saying that result will be announced on the spot at every polling booth.

To ensure credible election, Iwu said that the Commission will use its staff or members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to conduct its election.

He said the Commission will provide N6 million to each political party for its enlightenment and political education. He also said it is unlawful for any party that has no candidate for the election to campaign.
