A husband apparently shot dead his wife and two kids in their Utah home before killing himself on Father's day, police say.
Roy City Police Lt. Kevin Smith said on Monday that the department received a 911 call about an assault at 10pm on Sunday. The call was from a family member who had stopped by the house, about 32 miles north of Salt Lake City.
Officers found the bodies of 29-year-old Russell Smith; his wife, 26-year-old Shawna Smith; and their children, 6-year-old Tylee and 2-year-old Blake, inside the home.
Police said it appears Russell Smith shot himself, and they are not looking for any suspects.
Kevin Smith said there's no history of police responding to the home across from Roy High School before. Police have talked to family members and are trying to uncover a motive.
'It's very tragic... this was a very quiet family,' Smith said. 'The neighbors didn't hear anything coming from the home. The only screams they heard were from the people that found the scene.'
The family bought the home approximately six years ago.
Police said the bodies were discovered by a relative who became concerned about Shawna after texting with her earlier in the day and not getting a reply.
He declined to specify the person's relationship to the victims or what the text message said.
'Understand with these kinds of investigations it does take a long time to gather the information,' Roy officer Josh Taylor said.
'As you can see behind me, we're just barely getting to the point where we're starting to go inside the home and gather more information,' he added.
Everley said Russell Smith worked in the nearby city of Ogden at a company that recycles outdated military supplies, while Shawna Smith worked at a child care facility.
Sources said that Russell Smith had recently lost his job, but police could not confirm this.
"We heard screaming. We don't, I mean we don't know." said Dana Stevens a neighbor just down the street.
A lot of question still remain as to what exactly happened inside the Roy home. However, police say they were initially responding to an assault call, but when they entered the home they found the four bodies.
"The people that live there are really quiet kind good neighbors. We don't ever hear anything over there i mean we're shaken up nobody has slept on this road much," said Stevens.
Another neighbor told Good 4 Utah off camera the home was filled with a loving family of four, a mom, dad and two very young children and have lived in the neighborhood for the past five years.
"I'm very shocked and I'm very sad that this would happen in my neighborhood or anywhere," said Maureen Panganiban, another neighbor.
