Nigerian sprinter and Commonwealth queen of tracks, Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor, has been banned by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), following her appearance at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday, a few days after she failed to run for Nigeria in the 200m event at the just concluded IAAF World Championship in Beijing, China.

Guardian reports that Okagbare was Team Nigeria’s medal hope at the IAAF Championship in Beijing but she fumbled in the 100m final, finishing last, and also failed to show up for the 200m event four days later, despite appearing in the warm up area. She claimed injury and while some Nigerians were yet to come to terms on what transpired in Beijing, there was a shocker a few days ago, when Okagbare announced she will not be representing Team Nigeria for the 11th All Africa Games in Congo, an action which AFN and NSC finds unpatriotic.

True talk there, our govt don't appreciate most of our athletes effort even when they win medal. It was only during GEJ administration that i saw a lot of them being recognized and compensated...

She is good, we know. She is a record holder , we know but She is proving to be proud. She cant give a country that kind of manners. Did you follow what happened at the world athletic games in Beijing? She refused running - faking injuries. Refuse attending All African Games only to show up in another Diamond league. She feels she is big and no one can talk to her or blame her. Let her continue there. We will find kids who will go to Rio. Pride goes before a fall.

She wants to reserve her energy to represent the United States of Biafra. Are there no females from the North? I thought they are more qualified in everything right now, so let Buhari nominate them to represent Nigeria. Nonsense!
