Wayne Rooney has arrived at court wearing his wedding ring to face a drink-driving charge following his arrest earlier this month. The Everton striker, 31, arrived just after 9.30am in a dark suit flanked by a dozen police officers with his hands in his pockets, as a scrum of photographers gathered around.
Rooney was arrested at the wheel of ‘party girl’ Laura Simpson’s black Volkswagen Beetle convertible, plunging his marriage into crisis. The former England footballer met Simpson, 29, in a bar on a night out with friends and left driving her car.
Rooney arrived at Stockport Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning to face the charge. Police and community support officers were stationed at the front doors for crowd control purposes after a large group of journalists and others had gathered.
Rooney was arrested by Cheshire Police after officers pulled him over on Altrincham Road in Wilmslow, Cheshire, at 2am on September 1. He was released on bail later that day. After his arrest, police said the footballer, from Prestbury, Cheshire, had been “charged with driving whilst over the prescribed limit”. Wife Coleen, 31, who is expecting their fourth child, was in Majorca with their three young sons when her husband was arrested.
