Being a federal lawmaker in Nigeria comes with an unusual ease and financial comfort which is painted in the lackluster manner at which duties are being discharged in both arms of the legislatures.
If you get too tired on duty, you can as well sleep off while important issues are being deliberated without being sanctioned by the leadership of the house or your constituents.
A social media user, Uchenna Mathew Peter lamented on the perceived invasion of the Nigerian legislature by Tse-tse Fly which bit some lawmakers.
Quote
"These are the people representing you in the federal house of Assembles. Old papa's that have nothing to contribute to Nigeria.
Sleeping Senators" he posted with pictures.
The pictures show 3 senators and a House of Reps member chasing their dreams in the course of their duties to their constituents.
A fierce critic of the National Assembly and Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, Professor Itse Sagay’s (SAN) last year said that a Nigerian senator earns N29 million
Giving more details, Sagay said, “From the information I have gathered, a Nigerian senator earns about N29million a month and over N3billion a year. Basic salary N2,484,245.50; hardship allowance, 1,242, 122.70; constituency allowance N4, 968, 509.00; furniture allowance N7, 452, 736.50; newspaper allowance N1, 242, 122.70.
“Wardrobe allowance N621,061.37; recess allowance N248, 424.55; accommodation 4,968,509.00; utilities N828,081.83; domestic staff N1,863,184.12; entertainment N828,081.83; personal assistant N621,061.37; vehicle maintenance allowance N1,863,184.12; leave allowance N248,424.55; severance gratuity N7, 425,736.50; and motor vehicle allowance N9, 936,982.00.”

It is not funny. Who fixed their salaries and allowances. Even with such over bloated pay package, they are still more interested in oversight functions than carrying out their fundamental duties as lawmakers because of what they benefit from such organizations and agencies. We have more than a long way to go in fighting corruption in this Country.
