As for me, currently being in a distant relationship, it works if the two parties know what they want and have a plan they are working towards..

Phone calls every couple a days, texts or and e-mail keeps you going untill you see again...

Shouldn't be for a long time though...leaving ur sweetheart behind is depressing  :'( :'(
