Controversy trails hanging of 4-yr-old boy in Ondo

There is palpable tension in Odojomo area in Ondo town, Ondo West Local Government Area, as residents of the area have not recovered from the shocking death of a four-year-old boy, Akin Akinola, who allegedly hanged himself.

The incident, which happened at number 21, Olafemiwa Street, has thrown residents of the area into mourning.
Akin, a primary one pupil of Saint Agnes Primary School, Okegbala, was found hanging by the window of her mother’s room at about 8.30 am.

Some residents of the street, who spoke with Daily Sun on the condition of anonymity, said the mother of the little boy went out early in the morning to the market to buy some fruits, which she normally sells in the compound after giving her children pocket money.

It was further gathered that the little boy had earlier bought a sachet of milk from her stepmother who sells provisions at a nearby shed beside the house at about 8.00 am after which the he moved into her mother’s room. But few minutes later, the lifeless body of the boy was discovered, hanging by the window, which made some residents to raise alarm over the shocking incident.

The mother of the boy, Mrs Nike Akinola, who wept profusely while speaking with Daily Sun, said she left home very early for the market but was shocked to meet the lifeless body of her son whom she had given N10 when leaving home earlier. She noted that Akin did not go to school because he did not have a school uniform. She, however, said she suspected a woman in the house with whom she had some hot arguments as regards sweeping of the compound.

However, some residents of the street, who said they suspected foul play, said the rope and the way the hanging was carried out showed clearly that someone killed the boy before hanging him.
They alleged that the hand of the boy was not long enough to tie the rope to such a height.

However, men of the Ondo State Police Command have begun a preliminary investigation into the matter.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Aremu Adeniran, said some people were already being quizzed over the incident by men of the State Criminal Investigation Department.

The PPRO said no stone would be left unturned to get to the root of the matter. Meanwhile, some traditionalists were said to have sealed up the house to perform rituals before the boy’s body could be remove from the noose.

Soooo na to dey hang small children come de reign now. The 1st 1 na 5yrs now 4yrs again. The persons behind these evil act must be caught in Jesus name. Amen

this is their new style now to kiiled small children and hand them claiming that they hangs themslves. one day the person that killed this boy must hang him/her. he/she must not go Unpunished .

This is another one! The first one was hanged on a tree and he was 5yrs old, now this one is 4yrs and hanged inside his mother's home. What is happening in Nigeria is it that witchcraft is the only way of gaining money? Are we going to continue see children being murdered and the churches stand aside and not saying anything. These pastors etc they know what is the problem and they are not talking because they themselves are involved. Stop murdering your children and relatives to receive money from the devil. It is the same thing happening in Jamaica where children are missing then found dead since a particular church from the African continent plant themselves here. It is time persons read their bibles and stop allowing others to read for them. These young boys being killed for Money!
