Police say that four gunmen killed an officer guarding a church in the latest Northern church attack since Christmas Eve, Associated Press reports.
The Borno State police chief said Monday that the gunmen attacked a church near the Maiduguri International Airport in a drive-by shooting on Sunday.
Mohammed Abubakar said that a police officer was killed and that the church watchman was hit in the leg and shoulder.
Police have protected Maiduguri churches ever since two Christmas Eve church attacks in the city left 6 people dead.
Abubakar said the police believe the gunmen are members of a radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram.
Boko Haram was thought to be vanquished in 2009 after the military crushed its mosque and its leader died in police custody. But now, a year later, members have stepped up their attacks
