Former AC Milan forward, George Weah has congratulated Victor Osimhen after the Nigerian set a new record for most goals by an African in Serie A.
Osimhen beat Weah’s old mark (46 goals) after netting from the spot in Napoli’s 1-0 victory against Fiorentina on Sunday.
The Nigeria international is now the African with the most goals in a single season in the Italian top-flight after eclipsing the old record set by Cameroon legend, Samuel Eto’o.
Weah, who is now the president of Liberia felicitated with the striker through a message on the social media.
“My heartfelt congratulations to you, Victor Osimhen! I am very glad that you have accomplished a major milestone in your football career, after scoring your 47th goal in the Italian Serie A league,” Weah wrote on his Facebook page.
“The records show that with this goal, which you netted on Sunday, May 7, 2023 when your team Napoli went against Fiorentina, effectively makes you the African with the highest scoring record in the Italian Serie A league – surpassing my own account of 46 goals.
“I am so proud of your exploits and congratulate you on this remarkable achievement which is a result of your hard work, dedication and tenacity. I am also pleased with your kind words of honor in tribute to me upon reaching such a giant milestone.”
Osimhen has already established himself as one of the leading strikers in the world following his splendid showing for Napoli this season.
He has attracted the interest of European heavyweights who are keen on luring him away from Napoli this summer.
Weah has, however, challenged Osimhen not to relent in his effort.
