Veteran actor, Pete Edochie has reacted to the backlash he's been receiving following his controversial handshake with the Ooni of Ife.

The actor has been trending for days after a video of him greeting the Ooni of Ife with a handshake.

Pete Edochie met with the Ooni of Ife at the birthday celebration of Nigerian philanthropist and wife of Nigerian oil mogul, Tein Jack-rich, Elizabeth Jack-rich.

The video did not sit well with some critics who criticized him for not bowing down to the Ooni of Ife but gave him a handshake instead.

A lot of critics described the actions of the 76-year-old man as disrespectful to greet Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the most powerful king in Yoruba land, with a handshake.

In response to the criticism online, Pete Edochie has taken to his page to reshare the criticism from the critic with the caption, “High Chief for a reason, Igbo Kwenu.”

Pete bow for Ooni Huh? Someone that's like a son to him? That's forbidden in igbo land, Like are people well at all? A 76yrs old man bow for a 48yrs old man for some title? The Ooni wasn't even born when Pete featured in Things fall apart as Okonkwo and now he will start bowing for him? Respect is indeed dead!

You are starting to sound crazy - What has age got to do with it, woman of no culture! No wonder they said you people wake your fathers with a kick to his groins. In Yorubaland, culture is everything and this is why your arrogance has robbed the tribe a lot of opportunities! If Obasanjo who is older than Pete and also a high chief can prostrate to Oni of Ife, who is Pete? You are very sick!

You sound crazier. An Igbo man has no obligation to bow to any Yoruba King, it is you people that owe him that Respect. Or do you think that we do not have our own cultures and tradition? Do you know that it is an abomination for him to bow to anyone as a HIGH CHIEF? what makes you think that your culture supersedes everything? And not even that PETE visited his Palace, in that case, it would have been courtesy, but in this case, they met in a neutral ground and you want an IGBO HIGH CHIEF to bow to who?

Obasanjo's choice after all he's yoruba. Pete has to stick to his Ibo tradition which forbids an elder to bow for a child, title or no title.

You and your entire generation are sick and will remain sick till the world ends woman of arrogance! I can see you displaying your useless culture insulting yourself over nothing. Cultural brainless fool! Going about bowing like an idiot and prostrating with so much hypocrisy and no true actual regards is exactly what you call it, CULTURE!! It's neither respect or relevant where I come from,  Ibos value real respect not some fakery bowing display and rolling on the floor.

Thank you! Of course they wouldn't know that cos they're too obsessed with their culture to actually educate themselves on other cultures.  Angry

I would've joined in the criticism if Pete were to be a Yoruba man but he's not. This situation is a perfect example of how Nigerians have thrown away tribal and religious tolerance in a multicultural and multireligious society which in turn has impeded the peaceful coexistence that is expected of us.If what works for you in your culture doesn't work for me and it doesn't affect me in any way I simply look the other way by understanding that we come from a different cultural background. But come to think of it,how is it that a handshake(not a snub)would be a thing that'd be brought to the fore as a topic to argue about by Nigerian youths? That exposes how physically and mentally idle we are in this country.

I disagree with most of your political opinions especially concerning the last Presidential election. But in this issue, you are very astute in your reasoning. Others need to learn from your level of understanding, and knowledge of the fact that respect is reciprocal in this situation, because we are talking about two very different cultures here.

Ibos have no culture that shows respect to human dignity, they only show respect if they need favour, if Pete need contract from the king , he can bow down to greet and pretend to honour the king, can he go to Bratain and have a hand shake with the  king of Britain and said its becouse of the Igbo unvalued culture and try to have a hand shake with king? He can never try it.

That is why an Igbo man will never be the president of Nigeria, its better for an Togolese man to be a Nigerian president that Igbo man to be, becouse they are very selfish and arrogant.

How can Pete call himself a high Chief and trying to equate himself to Ooni of Great Ife in Yoruba LAND. its a shame and unacceptable. He should not try to come to Lagos becouse we will show him pepe.

Igbos dont have a king but Obis which is not up to third class king in Yoruba Land

The Oni Of Ife stretches his hand for a handshake in a birthday party and Pete Edochie shake his hand, how has that become a disrespect. I don't know what is wrong with this Facebook and TikTok generation.
