As the police intensify search for the killers of a 34-year-old divorcee and mother of two, Hadiza Ibrahim, another 45-year-old man, Alhaji Zubairu Lawal, has been burnt to death. His body was found in a well in the early hours of Monday, January 17, 2011, at his residence, Yusuf Yahaya Road, Kinkinau GRA, Ungwan Muazu, Kaduna South Local Government, Kaduna State.
The body of the mother of two, was found burnt in an uncompleted building in Layin Bilya, Rigasa, a suburb in Kaduna. Both cases are still under investigation. However, Lawal’s widow, Mallama Amina Umar, told Daily Sun that the last time she saw her husband was the night before his death, when he called her attention to attend to her crying baby: “My husband called me to attend to my two-year-old baby and asked me to meet him in his room, which I declined. Little did I know that, that would be the last time I would see him alive.
“I woke up that morning to discover a smoke coming from the uncompleted section that housed the well that was hipped with refuse. I asked my eldest son, Mohammad, to check and put the fire out. He rushed back to tell me that he met remains of a gallon of petrol and matches beside the well and burning human remains in the well covered with a metal door and a spare tyre of his father’s car on top. That was when I called our neighbour who also alerted others to come and help us.”
One of the deceased’s neighbours, Mallam Yahaya: “Amina came to my house at about 2pm to inform me that her husband is lying dead in his house and would want me to organize for his burial. I told other neighbours and the Imam of a nearby mosque who incidentally was not around, but some worshippers at the mosque accompanied me to the house. That was when I realized what happened and I immediately called in the police.
“The body that was completely burnt beyond recognition was brought out of the well by the police men led by the DPO of Tudun Wada Police Station, DSP Abubakar A. Balteh, who arrived the scene immediately.
“What surprises us was the way Amina kept the whole incident to herself for hours and even when she called for assistance to bury the remains of Zubairu, she could not mention the cause of his death. Knowing full well that it is her husband and the father of her child we are talking about and as neighbours, we deserve to know the exact situations of the incident.”
He disclosed that Amina and her children relocated shortly after giving their statements at the police station. When Daily Sun visited the house, no soul was seen as all rooms were under lock. A police officer at the Tudun Wada Police station who spoke on condition of anonymity explained that Amina Umar and her son were allowed to go and attend to numerous calls of sympathizers that were said to have besieged the house.
A community leader, Mai Ungwa Alkassim Jibril, promised to assist the police with useful information that would help to unravel the mystery behind Zubairu’s death in his house he was still struggling to complete:
“Even if investigation proved that he is mentally ill, we don’t agree to the way the police are handling the matter. Knowing full well the serious security breach and frequent criminal attacks we the residents of Kinkinau have been subjected to, almost on a weekly base.
“Though, we heard that Zubairu had been going through some psychological problem, but how do we explain the mystery behind his death? We are therefore appealing to the police not to relent in their efforts to provide security for the lives and property of the residents of that area.”
Spokesperson of the Kaduna Police Command, ASP Aminu Lawal, confirmed the incident, adding that although no arrest was made, the police have already commenced investigation to ascertain the mystery behind Zubairu’s Lawal’s death: “Our men have commenced investigations and, I shall inform you of any development about the case.”
