In a bid to address rising concerns over juvenile delinquency and vandalism, the Ebonyi State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has made significant arrests, highlighting the need for proactive measures to safeguard the community.
State Commandant Elijah Willie disclosed to reporters in Abakaliki on Saturday that three minors had been apprehended for an alleged attempt to assault another minor in Ishielu Local Government Area. Among the suspects, aged 15 and 13, one remains at large.
Willie emphasized the gravity of the incident, underlining the imperative of rehabilitation for juvenile offenders. He urged stakeholders to take decisive action to curb such trends, underscoring the importance of preserving the moral fabric of society.
However, one of the minors denied involvement in the assault, asserting that his interaction with the victim was merely disciplinary.
In a separate development, the NSCDC commandant also reported the arrest of two individuals for allegedly vandalizing electricity cables at the Ebonyi International Shopping Mall. The suspects, aged 21 and 22, hail from Amasiri in Afikpo North Local Government Area.
Expressing concern over the prevalence of vandalism in Ebonyi, Willie issued a stern warning to potential offenders, urging them to desist from such criminal activities. He stressed the need for community-wide efforts to deter vandalism and protect public infrastructure.
The commandant affirmed that thorough investigations would precede the prosecution of the arrested suspects, emphasizing the NSCDC's commitment to upholding law and order in the state.
As authorities continue their efforts to maintain peace and security, these recent arrests underscore the importance of proactive measures and community cooperation in combating crime and safeguarding public assets.
