EFCC Probes Eight Suspected Oil Thieves In Uyo, Akwa Ibom

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated a thorough investigation into the activities of eight suspected oil thieves currently in its custody in Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom State.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the EFCC's head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the suspects were apprehended for engaging in the illicit trade of petroleum products without the necessary licenses.

The suspects were arrested onboard a wooden boat named MV Jasmine on Friday, February 23, 2024, by the Nigeria Navy Ship Forward Operating Base Ibaka in Akwa Ibom. They were subsequently handed over to the EFCC on Tuesday, April 3, 2024, by the Commanding Officer, Captain (NN) Uche Aneke.

Among the arrested individuals are Pere Ebiye (Captain), Okon David (DeckMan), Enuwa Wilson (Cook), Wesley Okon (DeckMan), Ade Ojo Idowu (Asst. Engineer), Oluwadamire Abraham (DeckMan), Oluwole Azuzu (Asst. Captain), and Taiwo Adebanwo (Chief Engineer).

The suspects were intercepted aboard a boat loaded with 30,000 litres of petroleum products suspected to be crude oil, concealed in a cellophane-sealed compartment of the vessel and four Geepee tanks.

Captain (NN) Uche Aneke of the Nigeria Navy Ship Forward Operating Base Ibaka stated that the crew and exhibits were arrested at Posn Lat. 04°18.258°N. Long 008°29. 696’E by the Navy Ship Ekulu during a routine patrol. He emphasized the Navy's commitment to maintaining the safety and security of Nigerian waterways by combating criminal activities.

Upon receiving the suspects, boat, and seized products, the Uyo Zonal Commander of the EFCC, Assistant Commander (ACE1) Bawa H. Saidu, represented by Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC (ASE1) Terseer Chinyam, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Navy. He assured the Navy of the EFCC's continuous collaboration with security agencies to combat economic crimes across Nigeria.
