The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has issued an ultimatum to more than 20 government institutions, including the Power House building, Police Headquarters, and Nigerian Defence Headquarters, demanding the settlement of outstanding electricity debts or face disconnection.

The Power House building, located in Abuja's Maitama District and housing the office of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is among the facilities at risk. AEDC has also named the Niger and Kogi State governments as major debtors.

In a notice issued on Saturday, AEDC warned that failure to clear these debts by Monday, June 3, 2024, would result in automatic disconnection of electricity supply. The company emphasized the importance of timely payment to ensure the continued operation and enhancement of its infrastructure, vital for delivering efficient and reliable service to the community.

“This is to inform the general public that AEDC will disconnect all customers with outstanding electricity bills on June 3, 2024,” the notice stated. “Timely payment of electricity bills is crucial for the continued operation and enhancement of AEDC’s infrastructure, ensuring we can deliver efficient and reliable service to our community."

The impending disconnection highlights the ongoing financial challenges within government institutions and the critical need for improved fiscal responsibility to maintain essential services.
