Nigerians have been cautioned to avoid consuming rotten tomatoes and peppers, commonly referred to as ‘eesa’ or ‘baaje’ tomatoes, due to severe health risks. This warning comes from a medical doctor known simply as Wales, whose video on the subject has gone viral on social media.
In the video, Dr. Wales highlights the dangers associated with eating these spoiled vegetables, emphasizing that the presence of harmful microorganisms, such as fungi, can lead to serious health issues, including cancer. Displaying a plate of rotten tomatoes, he urged Nigerians to prioritize their health over cost-saving measures driven by the current economic hardships.
"Fellow Nigerians, good morning. I know that, because of the economy, you are saving money on so many things. But please, if you see these rotten tomatoes and peppers in the market, run away," Dr. Wales advised. "Just because we are in a tough economy does not mean you should start eating poison, because this type of tomato can cause cancer."
He explained that fresh tomatoes are rich in essential nutrients such as Vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants. In contrast, rotten tomatoes, often sold at lower prices, pose significant health risks due to their contamination by harmful microorganisms.
“These broken and rotting tomatoes are easily accessible to flies, which deposit germs and eggs inside them,” Dr. Wales noted. “But the most dangerous part is the invasion of fungi that produce mycotoxins as these tomatoes break down. Mycotoxins are linked to cancer and can cause immune deficiency in humans.”
Dr. Wales further clarified that common household methods such as boiling and washing cannot eliminate these mycotoxins. “These toxins are not only carcinogenic but can also damage the kidneys and liver,” he stressed.
This public health message serves as a critical reminder for Nigerians to avoid consuming compromised produce, regardless of economic pressures, to maintain overall health and well-being.
