The Anambra State Police Command has arrested 65-year-old pastor, Mr. Francis Ogwu, for allegedly defiling his seven-year-old domestic help in Awka, the state capital.
The suspect, a native of Imo State, is the General Overseer of Jesus House of Joy Church, Awka, where he has lived with his wife and children for over 30 years.
Ogwu's arrest on Thursday, June 27, followed an alarm raised by concerned neighbors. During interrogation, he confessed to the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, that he "just fingered the girl once," but denied other allegations of penetration, contradicting the victim's account.
Explaining his actions, Ogwu stated, "I was tempted because my wife usually gives excuses that she’s fasting whenever I want to have quality time with her."
The seven-year-old victim recounted her ordeal to Commissioner Obinabo, revealing that Ogwu had carnal knowledge of her three times. "He usually gives me money ranging from N500 to N1000 after each experience. Sometimes, his wife accuses me of snatching her husband from her. What prompted my leaving the house was the repeated beating I received from the daughter over irrelevant issues," she said.
The victim's mother, a native of Awka, had entrusted her daughter to the Ogwu family due to their long-standing relationship. However, when the child returned home and revealed the abuse, her mother was shocked and promptly involved the authorities.
Ogwu's wife and children have been living with him in Anambra State for over 30 years. The suspect attributed his actions to temptation, citing his wife's frequent fasting as a reason. The case is under investigation, and the pastor is expected to face charges for the alleged abuse.
