In a tragic turn of events, Malachy Chukwu, a hotelier in Anambra State, has reportedly taken his own life following the demolition of his hotel. The property, located in Ifite-Nteje community in Oyi Local Government Area, was destroyed by suspected local youths, leading to widespread unrest.

Chukwu's suicide has intensified the grievances of the Divine Heaven Amalgamated Landlords Association, who on Saturday staged a protest against the demolition. The association, comprising both men and women, lamented the destruction of several buildings, including Chukwu’s hotel, along the Chinua Achebe Airport Road. They claim the demolitions were carried out by individuals posing as executive members of the Ifite-Nteje Development Union.

Chief Patrick Maduegbuna, Chairman of the association, urged Governor Charles Soludo to intervene and prevent further escalation of the conflict. "The transaction took place in 2019, and we began developing the area after payment. Suddenly, they started demolishing our properties, claiming the land deal had been revoked. They destroyed houses, a hotel, and other buildings nearing completion," Maduegbuna stated.

He further explained that attempts to negotiate with the perpetrators were met with demands for additional payments. "We opted to protest rather than resorting to violence. There are over seven estates involved. We just want our properties back," he added.

The association's Secretary, Mr. Nwako Maduka, reiterated that all required dues had been paid and the relevant documents were signed by the very people now attempting to nullify the transactions.

Chief Ikechukwu Erikeife, Chairman of the Ifite-Nteje land management committee, acknowledged that some young men who had sold their plots were trying to resell the land, causing confusion and unrest. He assured that the parcels of land were acquired through legitimate means and pledged to address the situation as the developers could not afford to repurchase the land.

Contrarily, Mr. Ngoesina Okechukwu, Secretary of the Ifite-Nteje land management committee, dismissed the protesters as meddlesome interlopers. He asserted that the estate developers had followed due process in acquiring the land. "The Ifite-Nteje land management committee is a legally recognized body with the authority to represent the community. The court has acknowledged this in various cases, securing judgments for the entire Nteje community," Okechukwu, a lawyer, explained.

It was revealed that approximately 70 associations had acquired the extensive land along the airport road, with many buildings destroyed at various stages of completion. The protest underscores the urgent need for resolution to prevent further tragedies and restore order in the community.
