In a tragic incident on Saturday, an unidentified middle-aged man is believed to have committed suicide by jumping into the Gbodofon River in Osogbo, Osun State, Southwest Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. A witness named Muri recounted hearing the man express despair before leaping into the river. "I saw him coming toward me on the bridge, murmuring something in Yoruba that sounded like ‘ile aye ti su’ (I am tired of this life), before swiftly jumping over the railings into the river," Muri said.
Emergency responders from the Osun State Fire Service were promptly dispatched to the scene in an attempt to rescue the man. However, the rescue efforts were hampered by the high water levels and strong currents, exacerbated by recent rainfall.
Ibrahim Adekunle, spokesperson for the Osun State Fire Service, confirmed the incident. "Our stations at Okefia and Abere deployed personnel immediately upon receiving the report. Unfortunately, our officers were unable to locate the man due to the increased water level and current," Adekunle explained.
He also stressed the importance of seeking help in times of distress, noting that suicide is never the solution to life's challenges. The incident has left the community in shock and highlights the need for increased mental health support and awareness.
