The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Apapa Area Command, has announced the seizure of seven containers filled with contraband goods, including cutlasses, expired drugs, and potentially dangerous frozen chicken, at the Lagos Port Complex (LPC) in Apapa.
Customs Area Controller Babatunde Olomu revealed that the seized items, valued at approximately N292.2 million, were intercepted on July 17, 2024. The contraband items included:
- Two 40-foot containers carrying 12,000 pieces of cutlasses and machetes.
- Two 40-foot containers with 4,129 packages of frozen chicken.
- One 40-foot container with 368 jumbo bales of used clothing.
- One 40-foot container filled with expired pharmaceutical products.
Olomu detailed that the cutlasses and machetes were imported from China, the expired drugs from India, and the frozen chicken from Turkey.
“This operation was the result of a combination of intelligence gathering and thorough enforcement efforts to ensure that no cargo exits Apapa Port or any terminal under our command without proper inspection,” Olomu stated.
He emphasized that the Apapa command remains committed to enhancing trade facilitation and maximizing revenue collection while enforcing laws against false declarations, concealment, under-declaration, and undervaluation.
“We are also strictly implementing regulations set by sister agencies such as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for food and drugs, and adhering to end-user certificate rules as mandated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA),” Olomu added.
The seized items will be handed over to the relevant agencies for further investigation and regulatory action, Olomu confirmed.
